Today, the 199th birthday of President Abraham Lincoln is a fitting time to remind folks, as my good friend John Edwards has reminded us all, both why we fight, and more importantly why we must heal.
Lincoln's First Inaugural Address concluded with this message to the Secessionists.
I am loth to close. We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battle-field, and patriot grave, to every living heart and hearthstone, all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.
If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. It's never been about taking Congress back. It's about taking Our Country Back. And that includes all the People in this great land of government run for and by the People.
Some of you may have read I made it official yesterday, filing to run for the 2008 contest for U.S House in North Carolina's 8th District, and challenged each of the 10 counties in my District to match the filing fee of $1652 by the end of this month. The Netroots, never to be outdone, have kicked in over $700 since yesterday for their part, and I thank you so much!
As you know, it was your grassroots support that shocked the political establishment with one of the closest races in the nation last cycle, losing by just 330 votes to multi-millionaire, long-term incumbent Republican Robin Hayes, who outspent us more than three to one.
Your $16.52 to Kissell for Congress today represents your desire for change and the better angels of our nature well!
Thank you so much. I can't do this without all of you.
