Admiral Mullen on Don't Ask Don't Tell

It is my personal belief that allowing gays and lesbians to serve, and serve openly is the right thing to do. No matter how I look at this issue, I cannot escape being troubled by a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens. For me, personally, it all comes down to integrity. Theirs as individuals and ours as an institution.

Republicans generally oppose the repeal. I guess they have a different view of integrity than the good Admiral.

Where are my Goldwater Republicans or Libertarians?

“You don't have to be straight to be in the military; you just have to be able to shoot straight.”

--Barry Goldwater

They're all dead

or tied up in teabaggin' strings.

Goldwater was a RINO

I have heard some of these rather odd modern day Republicans refer to Goldwater as a liberal or a RINO when they have been told of some of his positions on issues of individual liberty. They truly are unhinged.

It was said that the best job in Washington was working in Goldwater's office. He was a good man with great integrity. That's why it was possible for so many people to respect him so much even when he was so very wrong about so many important issues.

I think it is safe to say he would have little in common with today's social conservatives who would love nothing better than to use the power of government to punish those they don't approve of or don't like.

It is long past time to scrap don't ask don't tell.

Southern Senator on DADT: It'll lead to "body art"

Hilarious! Please tell me this isn't true.

Am I being suckered by bad reporting on GOP GA Senator Saxby "6 deferments" Chambliss?

Military tattoos? What's next?

And drinking too

Now, just how did that "drunken sailor" expression get started, anyway?

Did someone forget to lock the door at the mental hospital or something?

The Onion: Gays Too Precious to Risk in Combat

The real reason DADT is still law.

'Gays Too Precious To Risk In Combat,' Says General

Now, that is just wrong user

Funny, but wrong, man :)

Colin Powell changes his mind about DADT

and is now in favor of Obama's position. John McCain must be having one of his senior-moment hissyfits.

Repeal "Don't ask, Don't Tell."

Since when can the Military Violate Federal Law. Unless I do not know my Law, I believe that Gay's and Lesbians are now a Protected Class under the Anti-Discrimination Laws of this Country. If I were gay or Lesbian in the Military I would file a Law Suit against the military for Blantant Discrimination.

Ted-Zee-Man

There is a difference, Ted-Zee

The military walks a different walk when it comes to "constitionatlity", so to speak. It is shown in how they treat detainees, actually. The UCMJ, or Uniform Code Of Military Justice, has a different set of rules and requirements than civil matters. Yes, much of it relates to "declaration of war" edicts, but even when that is not applied, it is different. For example, an "article 15" under the military is much the same as a "misdemeanor" under civil penalties, yet it is considered much different and the penalties are far different. Actually, it is not a "constitution" issue, it is a difference of law issue.

"Protectied Class" is not the same in the military as it is in the civilian law. I am not arguing it either way, just saying it is different. I hear you about the "law Suit you are suggesting, but it may not apply under these circumstances.

My belief is that gays and lesbians and transexuals should be able to serve openly in the military. I do understand that this will present problems with bathrooms and showers and sleeping arrangements and so forth with regard to that. But, I do not agree that there are not solutions to this.

Thanks.
