An adult conversation - aka JOBS

These days I am more of a reader than writer. I spend my time trying to figure out whether this means I have nothing to say or whether it means nothing I say makes a damn. That said, I have something to say.

Got a phone call from a dear friend today. He was screaming at me about why we have to cut this and cut that. He felt that the majority of those unemployed were simply gaming the system. He asked what I would do to cut the deficit without affecting growth.

This was my proposal:

  • Let the Bush tax cuts expire.
  • Get out of Iraq and Afghanistan within the next 6-12 months.
  • Use the money for a government jobs program to build infrastructure and green energy.

Keep in mind that just getting back to full employment would shed the deficit almost completely. The people who are currently not working would start paying taxes, and shopping, which would lead to more employment, and more revenue.

I have awoke from my slumber to call bullshit. Tax cuts for the rich does not create jobs. Slashing government spending does not create jobs. Inflation is not even close to being a problem. Put people who want to and can work to work. Period.

My challenge to everyone here at BlueNC is to write one post calling bullshit on the GOP plan and holding "our people's" feet to the fire.

Either that, or tax cuts and spending cuts will be the next big thing. With 9% unemployment. And nearly zero interest rates. And virtually no inflation. I will stand up if you will. Will you?
