AFP anti-tax campaign fails

70% of Onslow County voters said "yes" to a sales tax increase:

The commissioner’s sales tax hike pitch overtook a campaign by the Americans For Prosperity, which came out swinging against the increase when commissioners revealed their plan to spend half the revenue on schools and public safety.

And the punchline: 2/3 of the voters who turned out were Republicans...

Schools and public safety!

Americans for Prosperity is fanatical and extremist, one in the same with Tea Baggers. Their embrace of support on public policy is on its way to becoming a kiss of death.

If it does reach the point

that it achieves "pariah" status, AFP will merely be put into the recycling machine and emerge as the "Entrepreneurial Alliance" or the "Hair Club For Growth". Or the "American Institute for American Business in America" (AIABA). ;)

Makes a ton of sense

Raising the local sales tax can make a ton of sense, especially if you have a large amount of tourist traffic or have a lot of shoppers come in from outside the county. It allows you to put at least some of the tax burden on people outside your county. Otherwise, the burden is carried more on the backs of county property owners.

Here in Moore County, our sales tax referendum failed a while back even though we have a lot of tourism and are a regional shopping destination. We could have gotten Yankee golfers and out-of-county shoppers to help us pay for services and infrastructure, but since all taxes are bad we'll continue covering most of our costs with property taxes.

The voters went against something that probably would have reduced their overall tax burden. Oh well...
