Jane's Political Salon on BlueNC Radio

This is an experiment in citizen journalism. We'll work to refine the approach and the quality of the audio as we move ahead with our innovations. The first half hour is warm up, meeting and greeting guests at the salon. You really get a flavor for what we're doing, but you'll have to wade through my learning curve. The second half hour is Cal talking. Good stuff if you listen carefully.

Sorry for the quality ... I'm a babe in woods when it comes to the new medium.

A lot of noise, but a few interesting tidbits

If you're an anthropologist at heart, this might be interesting. If you're eager to hear Cal's comments, he kicks in around the 30 minute mark.

Voter Owned Elections & SCOTUS vs Sunshine

I was really happy to hear the support for & experience with pushing voter owned elections, and support for sunshine laws relating to SCOTUS ruling, such as with CEO’s saying they approved this message on corporate sponsored political ads & the like.

I'm glad to have him on the record on DADT. Previously he's chatted with me about DADT stating he's pro-lgbt equality in terms of being "in favor of ending DADT (and refusing to chapter anyone out of the Army for allegations while the senior-most prosecutor in Iraq)"

But it's nice to have it on a more official record than facebook chat =p (although how awesome is it to have potential senators reaching out to constituents via facebook chat)

Thanks for doing this James. I know you mentioned in it that you would delete it if it came out bad. PLEASE DON'T. I thought it was great. A little noisy in the background, but that isn't inappropriate given that it was covering a live event. And hearing the VOE & Sunshine stuff was great & something more people need to hear.

voter owned elections

How do you reconcile voter owned elections and the DSCC's early entry into a state primary? And please don't say that the DSCC will not have a tremendous influence in this election.

He addressed this head up

He said the DSCC has run its own polling and models and believes that he is the best candidate to beat Burr. He said further that if he wins the primary that he is confident the DSCC will get behind him in the general. When asked if the DSCC would get behind a different primary winner, he said to the questioner that she'd have to ask the other candidates.

As to current funding, he said he has roughly 1000 donors, all of whom are individuals, except he has also gotten leadership contributions from three Senators. (Sorry, I can't remember the names.)

The DSCC (Big Politics) could very well have a tremendous influence in this election, after the primary. Then again, so could Big Banking, Big Pharma, Big Insurance and Big Oil.

I thought his comments about money in politics and voter owned elections were both sincere and realistic.
