April 11th: a Nest Egg Hunt in Raleigh
Atlas has shrugged. The Masters of the Universe have screwed up so badly that even with their massively disproportionate power and influence they can't hide their failure. The Ponzi scheme is over and the financial industry is so badly busted that they can't even manage to take possession of many of the homes they foreclosed on.
You have been directly injured by what these people have done, and what they continue to do. I'm really tempted to name names and go through the list of suffering- suffice to say that by my count two thirds of the active contributors to BlueNC have had their lives (and livelihoods) directly affected.
Most people never wanted to leave the American dream in the hands of known loan sharks. The media wasn't silent, and grassroots organizations and elected officials raised strong voices of concern. Organizations like the AARP, the NAACP, and the Center for Responsible Lending sounded the alarm over a decade ago. Nonetheless, until now corporate corruption has carried the day - largely thanks to the insistence by GOP leaders that "greed is good" and that we should protect the free market only when it doesn't inconvenience multi-national corporations.
One of the few victories in the past ten years - one of the few times when the people overruled the greed of the financial industry - was when Democrats prevented GOP leaders like Sue Myrick and Richard Burr from privatizing the Social Security system.
Now that many of the banks have collapsed and US taxpayers have been forced to purchase them, the bankers and their lobbyists show no signs of changing their tune. These guys are smarter than you, they work harder than you, they are better than you - and if that's not the God given truth, then why are you out searching for a job while these guys are searching for a tax shelter?
Not only are the Masters of the Universe still riding high - their employees in the GOP are equally shameless. Ask Richard Burr if he will concede that fighting to give our Social Security to Wall Street was a bad move. Do you think he'll apologize, do you think he has changed his mind?
Nope. The lobbyists for corporate greed are still pushing the same agenda: no taxes - no regulations - no voice for workers - no public oversight. Not only are they loudly advocating for the same lack of accountability that got us into this mess, they are actually mobilizing their base to protest against any who would dare hold corporate giants accountable.
Here's what I'm trying to say: we're not going to get reform unless we take a stand.
Here's a first step. I hope you'll join with us.

I'll be there and volunteer some time as well
Thanks for your leadership on this, Jerimee.
It will take a strong showing of community, political and activist support if the people are going to successfully take on a banking industry that is dead-set against reform. As the Atlantic article shows, a small but very powerful clique of finance and banking interests hold unrivaled power in our country's political system. If we're to see real reform of the badly broken financial system that caused this economic crisis in the first place, it will be born from a mass-movement of the people.
BlueNC activists, please take some time during the holiday weekend to show your support for reforming a badly broken finance system. Please take some time during the week to invite your friends and family as well. If we don't do it, no one will.
If you're curious about the group behind this rally, A New Way Forward is only a few weeks old but already a national movement. You can find out more at the national website. What's amazing to me is that this is an all-volunteer grassroots movement. No political parties, labor unions, interest groups or any of the traditional organizations that usually drive these events are behind this. This a network of grassroots activists around the country volunteering their time to say that enough is enough - it's time to reorganize the financial system to work for us!
We are at a singular moment in our nation's history and now is the time for action.
