Are the puppets about to have their allowance cut?

This is pure speculation on my part, based on a few random tea leaves, but I recently received an e-mail from Civitas that included this:

Give a Tax-Deductible Gift to Civitas & North Carolina before the end of the year

The Civitas Institute is a beacon of conservative thought in North Carolina. Our vision is of a state that enjoys liberty and prosperity derived from limited government, personal responsibility, and civic engagement. Help us to continue this effort of voter education and our shared vision of a freer and more prosperous North Carolina.

So...a gift to Civitas can also be considered a gift to the entire State of North Carolina? ;o I'd be more apt to describe that as chasing the State of North Carolina down a dark alley, slapping it around a bit, then choking the life out of it. But that's me.

In case you're wondering why I'm on their e-mail list, I registered online some time ago so I could occasionally bring them my wisdom via clever commentary. Which I'm sure they appreciate.

The thing is, I don't recall such outreach efforts in the past, nor the begging for monetary assistance, such as this entreaty from Xavier (I'm assuming it's Xavier, because I can't imagine parents naming their child Xanadu):

If you find our polling and other work valuable, I would urge you to make a donation today!
If you donate $100 or more before December 31, 2010 you will receive the special analysis of this poll including a look at questions not included above.
If you care about policy and politics, you know we are the source for information in North Carolina – take a second and support our work.
Thank you

So, what gives? Is this just a normal, going-through-the-motions exercise to make it look like their work is widely supported, or is Sugar Daddy about to start rationing his sugar because he's decided to sweeten somebody else's cereal? Which reminds me, I forgot to eat breakfast this morning...

It's part of the normal shell

It's part of the normal shell game that the various sideshows play each year to make it seem as though their scams are supported by regular people. I suspect it's also part of a storyline designed to sustain the illusion that they're actually deserving of their non-profit status.

The truth is, the Show is a scam and an insult to the rule of law. If Roy Cooper was a decent Democrat with an ounce of backbone (I know, that's an oxymoron), he'd go after Civitas seven ways to Sunday.

Here's the truth about Civitas funding:

I'm sure you're right

In any case, it will likely be a couple of years before the Foundation's 2011 990 gets posted so year-to-year comparisons can be made.
