Astroturf coming to G'boro

The next time you hear the crazies talking about "grass roots" activism, print out a copy of this article and show it to them. Just remember, you might have to read it aloud for some.

An internal memo obtained recently by Greenpeace USA details polluting interests’ plans to launch a nationwide astroturf campaign attacking climate legislation at public events scheduled throughout the final weeks of recess before the Senate returns to debate the issue in September.

The email memo, which appears to come from the desk of American Petroleum Institute president Jack Gerard, asks API’s member companies to recruit employees, retirees, vendors and contractors to attend “Energy Citizen” rallies in key Congressional districts nationwide in the closing weeks of the August recess. The campaign plan places a special focus on 21 states picked by API for having “a significant industry presence” or “assets on the ground.”

Taking a page from the playbook of astroturf campaigners currently crashing health care town hall events across the country, API hopes to similarly sully productive communications between Congress members and their actual constituents at public events scheduled for the coming weeks. Gerard states that API is ready to bus in company members and provide logistical support, and reveals that API has retained “a highly experienced events management company that has produced successful rallies for presidential campaigns, corporations and interest groups.”

Download a copy of the email here. Pay special attention to this section:

We have identified 11 states with a significant industry presence and 10 other states where we have assets on the ground. We also have attracted allies from a broad range of interests: the Chamber of Commerce and NAM , the trucking industry, the agricultural sector, small business, and many others, including a significant number of consumer groups, which have pledged to have their membership join in the events in states where they have a strong presence. We also are collaborating closely with the allied oil and natural gas industry associations on these events.

One of those targeted states for "tentative venues" is Greensboro, North Carolina. Look for Dallas Not-a-dog Woodhouse to not be driving his Pope-Powered Magic Bus to our very own Gate City. Should be a riot, no pun intended.

Astroturfing Docs?

Glad to see that Republican's don't have a monopoly on fake.

And your point is?

The fact that Democrats can be sleazy and stupid has nothing to do with corporate astroturfing.

I request that you please resist the temptation to respond to fair criticism by saying "well they do it too."

Most people at BlueNC are well aware of integrity lapses and failures of the left. We point them out every day. If you can say "I do that too," I'd love to hear about it.

Sorry about that

I hate it when people say "and your point is" ... there's a guy at Ed Cone's who does it all the time and it gives me the creeps. I apologize. Please ignore that heading.
