I am sure that brighter, better-informed and more experienced folk who follow politics in NC have already posted in response to the news that Senator Marc Basnight has been diagnosed with Lou Gherig's disease. I am equally certain that I won't be the last to do so, given Basnight's service to this state. But I want to go on record saying how fortunate I feel for having worked within the sphere of his influence. I did not always agree with him, nor always like him, but I certainly did enjoy watching him at work. My best to Senator Basnight and his family.

James, that last move was especially telling. You made a last lash out, but provided me no ready mechanism for responding -- other than this.

It was unworthy of you.

It was and is unworthy of a blog that you want to promote.

Here are my questions:

1. Why did N&O endorse McCrory?
Is this about a grudge-match between N&O and the party? Doesn't seem like it, given that most of its other endorsements are for Democrats.

Hate to come across all mushy and cooing, but this interview of Joe Biden by a fifth grader is so delightful that it's worth the risk. Biden is his usual somewhat clunky self, but the charm of this little boy outshines Biden's determination to stay on message, and is bound to give a boost to anyone who sees is.

People, I kid you not. This is an actual comment recently posted at TAP. I guess we could expect that Obama's speech, and the wide acclaim it has received, would flush out the cretins. My purpose in cutting-and-pasting it here is to remind my fellow Democrats, Liberals, Progressives and Lefties -- and various and sundry respectable though misguided GOPers -- that this "anonymous" poster is lurking under a rock near you.

I may have missed it, but don't think anyone over here has picked up on the boat bill issue.

I don't know whether they figure as many Republicans as Dems have something to lose by making a campaign issue of it, but my god, whatever they stand to gain has to be awfully damned substantial to risk what seems to me a horrific stench that once again is coming from the Democratic side of the aisle.

I thought Gary Pearce's take on this question was pretty interesting. He not only suggests Hillary Clinton but gives some fresh reasons why. Thus, with permission:

Speaking of card-carrying liberals, I was recently pondering the idea of having a t-shirt made up that combined a bullseye with an identification of the wearer as a liberal. I don't have the creative skills to come up with and illustrate the design (though I know that plenty of YOU guys do) but I do have the stones to wear it.

Quoting with permission from Pamela Troy's personal blog -

How could it have happened?

"Liberalism is, in essence, the HIV virus, and it weakens the defense cells of a nation." -- Michael Savage 7/11/2006

"We need to execute people like John Walker [Lindh] in order to physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed, too. Otherwise, they will turn out to be outright traitors." — Ann Coulter, speaking to the Conservative Political Action Conference, January 2002

"We do detest you, we despise you and we hold you in complete and utter contempt…The day will come, the day will come when unpleasant things are going to happen to a bunch of stupid liberals, it’s going to be amusing to watch, very amusing to watch." -- Lee Rodgers, on liberals, KSFO radio, 6/30/06

"If guns are outlawed, how can we shoot the liberals?" -- State Sen. Mike Gunn (R-MS), quoted in the Atlanta Journal -Constitution, 12/31/96

Can any of you imagine the reaction had so-called "liberal" commentators made cute jokes like these?

Not good news, but not unexpected.

I watched the "Senator No" documentary on WUNC and strongly recommend it.

It aired last night at 9:00 pm but I believe it will air again, as most UNC shows do, maybe in another time slot this weekend.

It's pretty even-handed -- probably won't change anyone's mind about Helms' legacy, but it is interesting. It's always interesting to me to see people fleshed out a bit. At times Helms did seem human.
