In his newest Focal Points blog post, Cal Cunningham draws upon his personal experiences and conversations across North Carolina to delve into the heart of our economic matters - by counseling with leaders across the energy and security spectrums and formulating a strong, comprehensive plan that will effectively generate the green jobs of our future. North Carolina has a lot riding on a greener economy.

“I went to Washington last week to meet with national security experts about the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act – legislation filed Wednesday in the U.S. Senate written to help create clean, green, sustainable jobs that can’t be outsourced overseas, to transition our economy to alternative and domestic energy sources and to check climate changing carbon emissions.”

When Nascar drivers, legends and fans are welcomed to the White House for a wonderful celebration of the sport and recognition of its history, could there be a bit more in play than just a toast to the winning teams? Politico has a fantastic story on the event (even noting that, of the current and former champions in attendance, they have contributed nearly $150k in political donations since the 1980s - all to Republicans!). However, that doesn't stop our President, or a potential future Senator, from recognizing both the significant achievements and passionate assistance the Nascar family has shown to North Carolina and the rest of the country. The Asheville Citizen-Times is getting some national press today thanks to a single question they posed to NC-11 representative, Heath Shuler. The paper simply wanted to know if Rep. Shuler lived at C-Street (it is a common assumption that he stays there while in D.C.). The Shuler camp response: We're not going to get into private details.

I bet the offices of Sanford, Ensign and Pickering all thought the same thing initially.

Now, now now. I'm not saying Shuler is guilty of any misdeeds. But there is no sense in staying at C Street and allowing your constituents, not to mention the country at large, pinpoint your guilt by association. Why even continue your relationship with such a roundly disgraced and disgraceful operation? After all, the housing market is still in shamble. Can't you get a good deal on a 1 bedroom in Arlington, Heath?

Cal Cunningham,Richard Burr

Cal Cunningham has been gaining a lot of press and grassroots support in hopes that he will decide to pursue the Democratic nomination for North Carolina's 2010 U.S. Senate seat. His admirers on Facebook and Twitter are constantly growing and Cal has certainly been listening to these passionate voices.

Cal released a personal statement to his supporters moments ago. It is attached below for the BlueNC community to hear. Thank you.

Draft Coop posts the scoop from the N&O today with the announcement that BlueNC's least favorite son, Heath Shuler, will not be running against Burr in the 2010 Senate race. After all the work he had put in previously (Bill Clinton hosting a fundraiser on his behalf in Raleigh, announcing Barack Obama at the National Day of Prayer, etc.) it appeared that the conservative DINO from the mountains was trying to build a large, centerist(right) base for which to target Burr next year. However, it is all for naught.

Truth be told, I don't think Jimmy Fallon is a "comedian," nor do I think his new late-night show on NBC will be "funny." However, this bit that Politico scooped showing Fallon getting a, ahem, "rub" in on NC-5 Rep. Virginia Foxx was just too good not to pass along.

I actually found this funny, but about as subtle as an anvil to the forehead. But hey, with the way conservatives are leaning nowadays, maybe even they will get the joke.

In an intriguing development, NC 3 Representative Walter Jones (R) - coiner of the term "Freedom Fries" and ridiculer of everything French - is co-sponsoring John Conyer's bill that will call for the investigation of war crimes by our monstrously unpopular and distrusted ex-President (man, that was a lot of -s in that sentence - Sorry). Jones has been well known amongst Washingtonians as a vehement critic of W.'s Iraq policy, shrouds of secrecy and power grabs that forced Congress into back many controversial pieces of his delusional, rushed and unneccesary invasion of Iraq.

First Chief Performance Office appointee Nancy Killerfer, now Health and Human Services appointee Tom Daschle. Both have withdrawn from consideration for their positions on account of tax troubles. Two deep, painful black eyes for the new president.

Killefer, though damaging, can be replaced. She is not the consumate Beltway insider (though she does have credentials) and her office would be a bit more abstract - documenting fiscal performance within the budget office. A position necessitating competence, for sure, but not so for political muscle. She can certainly be replaced.

Granted, I do not spend an inordinate amount of time reading conservative blogs (though it is occassionally useful/fun to see what horrors they may be wailing against from time to time). Today, having just gotten back from Washington, I thought it would be interesting to see what some of the more, shall I say, confrontational blogs had to say regarding the Inauguration and Obama's first two days in office.

From up Asheville way, the Scrutiny Hooligans are already predicting that loyal Blue Dog Dem and WNC favorite, Heath Shuler, will be the challenger to Richard Burr for the open Senate seat in 2010.

Although not the favorite of most Progressives in North Carolina, Heath is widely acknowledge for having heavily fortified coffers and, if Gordon is to be believed, none other than former President Bill Clinton will be hosting a fundraiser for Heath in Raleigh a week from Monday (after the President Clinton delivers an address at N.C. State). Roy Cooper and Richard Moore, justifiably, have been getting most of the attention from early internet speculation concerning the race, but should they be worried about Shuler as a formidable candidate?
