Click the picture above for a BlueNC post from almost two years ago, back when the real Thom Tillis began to emerge in the General Assembly. Then fast forward to today and witness the Speaker's spectacular display of arrogance and corruption. If there were such a thing as a culture of ethics in our legislature, Thom Tillis would already be under investigation for conflicts of interest involving both Time Warner Cable and Justin Burr's bail bonds racket. If there were such a thing as a culture of ethics in our legislature, Thom Tillis would already be in jail.

We started talking about this a couple of weeks ago, and are now pleased to report: it's happening.

If you're on Facebook, please take a minute to join the open group set up by Mark Chilton, mayor of Carrboro. Once you join, please go to the upper right-hand corner of the page and start inviting others to join the group, both on Facebook and by email.

Do it now.

Also please use comments on this thread or on the Facebook to tell the General Assembly what demands you are bringing to this protest. For example, Reverend Barber has made the reasonable demand that McCrory, Tillis and Berger meet with people whose lives they are trashing.

My demands are less reasonable. I demand that every member of our illegitimate General Assembly resign his or her seat and stand for re-election in 2014 in new, legally defensible House and Senate districts.

It's hard to understand why Governor McCrory and Republicans in the General Assembly are spending their time and our money "fixing" things that aren't broken instead of looking for opportunities to lead our state forward. Eight other states already have industrial hemp laws in place, and are poised to capitalize on this new cash crop. Many more have already cut their enormous costs of incarceration for minor drug offenders. Meanwhile, our legislature is doubling down on putting more of our fellow citizens in jail.

America's war on drugs has failed in every imaginable way. Changes in marijuana laws alone could save our nation more than $40 billion each year. For North Carolina, that translates into big bucks. We're currently spending hundreds of millions to achieve absolutely nothing.

Industrial hemp could be even more important to our state's economy. Industry groups have produced estimates ranging upwards of $500 billion annually for industrial hemp on a global basis. We need to find a way to participate in this growing economy.

In one of the most absurd abuses of logic from a General Assembly full of more abuses than anyone can count, Republicans want to charge 28,000 North Carolina residents an extra fee for owning hybrid cars.

An annual fee of $100 for electric car owners and $50 for hybrid car owners would be levied on state residents. The fee would raise $1.5 million for the state Department of Transportation in the upcoming year. State Senator Bill Rabon, R-Brunswick, is a supporter of the measure, arguing that electric and hybrid car owners should not get a “free ride” by not paying state gas taxes...

“If they want to use the highways, we expect them to pay for the highways just like every other citizen that uses them,” Rabon said. “I don’t think anyone that owns these vehicles will balk at all.”

I have news for Senator Rabon. I will not only balk, I will also do everything I can to mount a class-action lawsuit against the government of North Carolina for discrimination, or perhaps just for plain stupidity.

It doesn't matter whether you love or hate the Democratic Party. It doesn't matter whether you like the current leadership or not. It doesn't matter if you're an unaffiliated voter, a Republican, a Democrat, or a Libertarian. Anyone with her eyes open can see that Raleigh is out of control. So make plans to show up on an upcoming Moral Monday, either as a supporter or as a person willing to put yourself on the line for freedom and fairness.

Good people may disagree about the wisdom of Moral Mondays, but from where I sit, the strategy of civil disobedience is the single most effective action concerned citizens can take to fight the illegitimate government in Raleigh. NC Policy Watch today offers an excellent analysis of the situation, well worth your time and attention.

Read the whole article, and then mark your calendars for June 3 (if not sooner) to join a full-court press against the Republican machine.

Thanks to the Independent Weekly, the media silence has broken and the deluge of criticism begins. After scanning reader comments online, it's a good thing I don't worry a lot about what people think of me.

The best thing about Protzman is that he isn't a politician, and he has a near-compulsion to say what he thinks in the most direct, if sometimes profane, way. Protzman was one of the first people in North Carolina to accuse Republican moneybags Art Pope of, well, read it for yourself: "Art Pope is contaminating North Carolina politics with the sleaze and corruption of corporate money, just as is the national Republican Party."
