Checks and balances
Submitted by TrueMeckDem on Tue, 06/28/2011 - 12:28pmWhy do some people have such a problem with this basic constitutional concept?
"To prevent one branch from becoming supreme, protect the "opulent minority" from the majority, and to induce the branches to cooperate, government systems that employ a separation of powers need a way to balance each of the branches. Typically this was accomplished through a system of "checks and balances", the origin of which, like separation of powers itself, is specifically credited to Montesquieu. Checks and balances allow for a system based regulation that allows one branch to limit another, such as the power of Congress to alter the composition and jurisdiction of the federal courts"

come work for Democracy NC
Submitted by TrueMeckDem on Sun, 06/12/2011 - 9:00pmEastern NC organizer
Democracy North Carolina uses research, organizing, and advocacy to increase voter participation, reduce the influence of big money in politics, and achieve a government that is truly of the people, for the people and by the people. The Eastern NC organizer works in Greenville, Rocky Mount, Wilson, Tarboro, and northeastern NC to mobilize and train citizen activists, plan events, supervise summer organizers, and build progressive coalitions with local organizations. The organizer can expect extensive travel and irregular hours due to the nature of community organizing.
The ideal candidate will:
-- have a BA or extensive political and organizing experience
-- have at least two years experience working on a progressive social justice issue
-- have extensive knowledge of North Carolina
-- have general knowledge of and a good understanding of the North Carolina political system and state legislative process

Democracy North Carolina is no 'partisan ally'; ask Jim Black
The writer is board chairman of Democracy North Carolina.
Art Pope tries to deflect criticism of his campaign donations by labeling Democracy North Carolina "a partisan ally of the N.C. Democratic Party." He may want to ask former House Speaker Jim Black, a Democrat, what his thoughts are on this subject. Research by our director, Bob Hall, led to Black's resignation and eventual conviction. Democracy North Carolina is a nonpartisan watchdog that works to protect the citizens of North Carolina from the influence of big money in our electoral process and has worked with Mr. Pope's own John Locke Foundation on several issues in the past.
