Breaking: Governor to veto unconstitutional Republican health reform obstruction

On Twitter: Tillis sez Governor Perdue will stand for the Constitution against Republican subversion.

I received word last night that the Governor will VETO the "Protect Health Care Freedom Act" we passed last week. The Gov wants Obamacare to be imposed on North Carolina. What do you think? Post a comment and send the Gov an email to governor.office@nc.gov. If you don't mind, copy me at thom.tillis@ncleg.net.

I don't know about you, but I'm with the Governor. Tillis knows his piece of crap legislation is explicitly in violation of the North Carolina Constitution, and yet he's still grandstanding.

Write him now. thom.tillis@ncleg.net

My message to the Governor

I have never been more proud of you. Thank you for taking this stand for the people of North Carolina and for the NC Constitution. I don't know what the Republicans are thinking. It's like they LOVE the Constitution when it furthers their agenda, but want to undermine it when it doesn't.

As AG Cooper has written, this legislation clearly violates the North Carolina Constitution. Furthermore, it undermines some of the most important efforts underway to bring down the skyrocketing costs of health care.

Thank you, Governor Perdue. I know I give you a hard time every now and then, but when you stand with the people, you can always count on my support.

What the Constitution says

As I wrote earlier this week, the Republican bill violates the North Carolina Constitution on its face. Even Bob Orr, constitutional scholar that he is, has to agree on that point.

Sec. 5. Allegiance to the United States.
Every citizen of this State owes paramount allegiance to the Constitution and government of the United States, and no law or ordinance of the State in contravention or subversion thereof can have any binding force.

A veto of this bill saves the state money

What more is there to explain?

The federal court cases go forward with or without us.

Why should North Carolina taxpayers waste one dime on this nonsense as we deal with a budget shortfall?

Veto this bill, Governor. And put in your veto message what a waste of money the bill is.

Berger blows smoke

In response to the Governor's Veto:

“There’s no doubt this veto is a political move designed to protect the interests of Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Washington Democrats. But it hurts North Carolinians by forcing them to follow an unconstitutional law. The people of North Carolina expect their leaders to change the course of state government, not score political points or protect their political patrons.”

The people expect their leaders to steer the ship of government carefully, not continually change its course at the whim of whatever right-wing ideologist happens to be standing at the podium at the moment.

The fight against health reform is a national one, funded by insurance underwriters, big pharma, and other special interests who are determined to keep their multi-billion-dollar gravy train running, even if it fractures and bankrupts our society in the process.

If anybody's playing politics at the expense of the people, it's the GOP leadership.

Lead foot Berger

Berger's a bit testy about being told to slow down. He had a court date yesterday in Rowan County for a speeding ticket. Today the veto. The universe is trying to tell him something.

Oppo Researcher

Greg, you have a real knack for opposition research. Tom Murry's finances aside, you even know when and where GOPers get pulled over. Awesome!

By the way, I recently learned that Tom Murry hired Pat McCrory's sister as his Legislative Assistant. Perhaps a nice kickback for hosting that fundraiser for Murry at Rock Angus Barn?

Mike

Greg is the best at this

I wish we could hire him full time to uncover the truth about the cancer of corruption that lies underneath the NCGOP's lily white skin.

McCrory

Maybe because she did so well in this "job interview":

Note the comment: "People should be grateful and respectful of all candidates". Too bad that didn't include Chris Heagarty.

BTW Berger was doing 77 in a 55.

I meant...

... Angus Barn, not Rock Barn.

Watching the punk on tape makes me want to pick up self-flagellation.

Great job by Gov. Perdue

She is showing she is not afraid to stand up to the Republicans.

The Veto

It was the right thing to do. Well done.
