Charlotte a finalist for Dem 2012 convention

Great news! Charlotte has been name as one of the final four in contention for the Democratic National Convention for 2012. We could certainly use all the help we can get from the national party to stay blue in that next big election, and this would certainly bring the national party's eye here.

In addition to bragging rights, the economic impact could tremendous. Denver reported earning $266 million when it hosted the 2008 Democratic convention. That's a lot of money and a lot of jobs created at a time when we're working to get our economy back on track.

You can aid in our efforts to getting the convention to the Queen City by signing this petition or you can upload a video or personal story here stating why you think the Democratic National Convention should come to North Carolina.

I first saw this good news on Mayor Kleinschmidt's twitter/facebook post a couple of days ago, and soon there after have seen and heard the news from a number of sources. I decided to blog about it today since there is now that call to action by the NCDP. The other cities being considered are Cleveland, St. Louis, and Minneapolis. I think our position in the south, as a battleground state, near another potential battleground state like VA, and the fact the Charlotte recently elected a Democratic mayor all weigh in our favor.

Thanks for the good post, Jake

I can't help wondering if Bank of America and Duke Energy would actually give permission for all those commie socialists to come into their town.

Their money is still green

A convention could bring in some money to the city, and I think we know we're their priorities ultimately lie.

Good point

we don't have the mass transit needed

I was in Denver in 2008 and saw how most people got around: mass transit and we don't have it. I can't think of any hotels outside of the inner city core that are on our one light rail line and our bus system is a joke.

Too much haterade! I think

Too much haterade! I think CATS would be able to handle the traffic with a couple of adjustments - the very effective Sprinter service can provide transportation to downtown from Charlotte-Douglas, and many roads with multiple hotels along the light rail line (Nation's Ford, Arrowwood, Tyvola, Woodlawn) have bus connections. A couple of adjustments here and there and I'm sure we'll be able to handle it.
