Classic Durham: watch trucks get decapitated outside of my office..really.
I love it -- this video captures the fun all of us who work in the Brightleaf Square buildings in downtown Durham get to hear at least once a month -- trucks that are too tall careening down Gregson Street and slamming into the railroad overpass. Someone in the building actually set up a camera to capture the insanity and compiled a "best of" tape.
I've actually only seen it happen live a couple of times, but I can clearly hear it from my office since I have a window and face that direction. The last time I recall it happening I was getting a cup of tea across the street at Alivia's and was talking to the person behind the counter and we heard the familiar "BOOM!" We turned around and kept on talking, lol.
The scary part is that up until a few years ago, the trucks slammed directly into the bridge/overpass. Since this surely placed the trains at risk, they set up steel beams just before the bridge so the dumbasses could slam into that. And what is ridiculous is that there is a big height sign on the beam (11' 8") and not long ago they added flashing lights -- and these drivers still keep crashing into it.
Hat tip, Bull City Rising.

but wait...there's more (accidents)

There may be more to this story than....
meets the eye. I did a short career job with 18 wheelers a few years back. One of my deliveries was to Pittsburgh, Pa, a city I had never been to before. I had to follow truck route signs through the town, before finally arriving at my destination. Then on the way back, I followed more 'truck route' signs, including one that said the interstate was in the same direction. By now, I'm relieved to be leaving that old town with small, congested streets, and get back on the open roads. Anyway, I came to an intersection, which looked very much like your picture, and the Interstate sign pointed to make a right turn to go under an overpass. As the light turned green, and a few cars ahead of me turned right, I was near enough to see the height sign on the bridge which was 12 feet! All the interstates are set up for at least 13'6", and I knew I needed to be over 12 feet, so made a quick decision and rolled straight ahead and pulled over. I must have sat there for a half hour trying to figure some way around this, when a cop pulled up, and wanted to know what I was waiting for. When I told him my problem, he said "this is not a problem". Just ahead there was an entrance to a city park, which was plastered with "No motor vehicle" signs. The cop told me to follow his car, and he turned into the park and we drove only about a quarter mile, back out onto another street, which led me straight onto an entrance ramp to the Interstate. I was lucky, or aware enough, to catch that height sign, so avoided that disaster. But I did have plenty other adventures to believe that experience means everything in trucking.
All rentals.
At almost the same area, I came "this" close to taking out the roof of a gas station because I was returning a rental van. I was tired, had been carrying stuff for three straight days and drove about 10 hours in between. That is why you stay away from rental vans.
Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.
