Congratulations Mark Kleinschmidt, Mayor of Chapel Hill

Congratulations Mark Kleinschmidt, Chapel Hill's next mayor. In the early days of BlueNC Mark posted about death penalty cases and kept us current on actions we could take to help end state sponsored killings in North Carolina. He is smart, kind and progressive. He will make a great mayor of Chapel Hill.

Congratulations also go out to Jake Gellar-Goad, Mark's Volunteer Coordinator. He did an excellent job and in a race this close and with so little money spent those highly organized volunteers more than likely made the difference. Good work, Jake. Glad you're on our side.

I'm sure I'll have more to say and share in the coming days, but right now I need some sleep. Thank you NC for being Bluer now than you were at the start of the day, this is a state I'm proud to call home.

Voter Owned Elections won the night

Mark won as a voter owned candidate despite his more well funded opponent, and the most vote gettingest town council winner, Penny Rich, was not an incumbent who also participated in the voter owned elections.

Voter Owned Elections only applied to the mayoral and council race, and the top vote getter in both was a Voter Owned Candidate.

This year's Chapel Hill election is not merely a local issue -- it is important state-wide. The bill that would have extended public financing was put on hold in the Senate because they wanted to see how the Chapel Hill election goes.
