AT the Edwards Press Conference

Dear Friends,
I am currently sitting at the Carolina Inn, located just about two blocks from where I work. Soon, we will have a press conference by Elizabeth and John Edwards. The back-story is, of course, that Senator Edwards recently had to cancel campaign appearances to be with his wife for a follow-up exam. Originally, it was nothing, the type of follow-up that had happened before and that preferred to be present at. But, now the follow-up exam is over and we're told to expect an announcement. Campaign staff are tight-lipped, although there is a "buzz" that the campaign is not over. We can only hope that means that whatever is happening is not too bad. I think we will have to assume it is something, but hopefully it is not everything. Updates after the break.

CNN saying campaign will be suspended.

could be just a rumor, I heard it as a rumor a few minutees ago.

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

Praying and staying tuned

Thanks for doing this Robert.

Noncurable.

They are staying very optimistic, but its bone cancer and its noncurable. It's low volume and they are saying others in the same situation live a long time, much like a patient with diabetes.

On the campaign side, Edwards says the campaign goes on, no suspension, no slowing.

Sad and happy

All my prayers are with Elizabeth and her family, and I'm so sorry to hear of the recurrence of cancer. On a more upbeat note, I'm extremely happy that John Edwards will not slow his campaign down. He is what we need for 2 terms. Let's get busy, quiet the naysayers and support them both!

i was driving earlier

and a local FM station, 96 rock, said they were going to be carrying it live. It says some amazing things about this country that so many people genuinely are concerned for the welfare of people they havent met.

There are so many good traits that Americans have, we just have to channel them.

An update.

Type IV Metastatic Breast Cancer. It's not a diagnosis you would want to hear about someone in your family. And. I feel like Elizabeth Edwards is family. I've met her only a handful of times, but I've been fortunate enough to email back and forth with her a few times and to read her blog posts and hear the Podcasts. And. I feel like she is family.

When I heard the doctor say this was what it was, and that it was in her bones and lung, I was sad. Then, I was, for about ten minutes, hopeless. Then, then, I started thinking about what I had just seen. A woman diagnosed with an incurable disease, with a whole family to think about, not to mention herself, who says that John Edwards needs to be our President. She says that she isn't going to wallow, or hide in a corner crying - although she certainly has earned that right - no, she is going to hold her head up high, and she is going to fight for her husband to be the next President of the United States.

Me too.

Hell, yeah.

Why isn't this on the front page?

I know she doesn't blog here but if she isn't part of the wider BlueNC community, then no one is. And we're all feelin' it today, don't you think?

Looks like it was my fault.

I "stickied it" but didn't front page it.

Thanks Robert

I saw Elizabeth in action at the recent ConvergeSouth conference. Quite impressive. I can see why folks think she is probably the better half of an Edward's presidency ;-)

Thanks Robert for the medical reflections. I'm at that age when folks I know have dealt with this type of cancer - it is a tough one but Elizabeth strikes me as the kind of person that will slug it out.

I'm over at WSM and overheard several conversations and expressions of concern in near realtime with the announcement. Whether they want Edwards as President or not, seems like Elizabeth has been adopted by the local community.

She has many adopted friends it seems.

The local community, and the blogosphere. People online can smell a phony a mile away, and they know that she isn't one. She's a real blogger, in addition to being a real nice person, and folks know that and respect it.

I do.

Please count on me and probably the whole BlueNC community

to be a part of your support team Elizabeth. Our love and prayers are with you and your family today. You are an amazing woman and one Hell of a fighter, we've got your back!

John and Elizabeth Edwards have seen adversity before....

I am praying that this tragic news will be dimmed by the overwhelming progress of whatever treatments or medical procedures Mrs Edwards will experience from here out.

No, I do not know the Edwards personally, but I know enough about them to know they are overcomers in this life. Examples to us all.

My prayers and fondest hopes for recovery are with the Edwards family.

I second momoaizo's sentament. We are here for you. It ain't over by a long shot.

In my thoughts and in my heart.

Hard news - that so many women face every day. I hope that someday this diagnosis is not the devastating news that it is today.

Elizabeth, may you continue to face adversity with grace and elegance. Cry when you have to, scream when you have to, and whenever you need to, come on home to NC - we've got lots of love and laughter for you here.

Robert---I missed you there!

I arrived at five until noon to discover their lot was full. Thankfully, their valet followed me to another lot and brought me back to the hotel on their shuttle. I made a beeline for the courtyard where the press conference was being held, set up my cameras and braced myself.

While I expected some bad news, when I heard John give the details, my whole being froze up with fear. As a "citizen journalist on site" I knew I had to maintain my composure and keep working. But as I did, the tears fell.

I'm deeply saddened that Elizabeth and her family have to endure this but at the same time, I know Elizabeth's strength will keep her living life to the fullest well into old age. She will become our next First Lady, see her children grow up and remain an inspiration to all of us.
