Is Onslow Commissioner Joe McLaughlin a Pope Puppet?

In the latest edition of Onslow County Commissioner Joe McLaughlin's "Onslow Board of Commissioners Update" (McLaughlin's self-written newsletter on BOC activities), he plays up his relationships with the John Locke Foundation, John Hood (the Locke Foundation's director) and Arthur Pope, benefactor of the John Locke Foundation and president of Variety Wholesalers, Inc.

Says McLaughlin about John Hood and the John Locke Foundation staff:

John and his talented staff have done a magnificent job illuminating corruption in Raleigh and advancing conservative themes. We are fortunate to have them.

Commissioner McLaughlin met with Art Pope at the Lohn Locke Foundation's award celebration also.

The Pope family's vision, leadership, and generosity have made the Locke Foundation and many other conservative educational endeavors possible.

Here at BlueNC, we're familiar with JLF, John Hood and Art Pope, but others in Onslow County may not be so informed. I have a feeling that if I'm right on McLaughlin's desires to unseat Congressman Walter B. Jones, Jr, his campaign may be funded by PopeCo and that McLaughlin's relationship with Pope, et al will need further spelunking.

Oh man, hell yeah.

This is the first stage of getting your strings attached. Suck up to the Stagemanager and the Puppetmaster . . . then come hat-in-hand saying "Please hep me win me a seat somewhere. I promise to do whatever you want cuz I hate gummint just as much as you do."

That's okay, though. The Puppetmaster's base of support is shrinking like the polar ice caps. Soon only the fringiest of the fringe will have anything to do with him . . . and his status as an albatross will be fully established.

Great post, Thomas. Recommended.

Dumb Ass! Now Walter has got pics of the great suck up meeting. Looks like Swift boat Joe campaign is off to a roaring start like Sponge Bob Orr Gov campaign. I can see the Republicans running around with pics of Black and Democrat candiates and the Democrats running around showing pics of the Republican candiates with Hood and Art.

Let the war of pics start!

Very nice post.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

Vote Democratic, the ass you save may be your own.

Run 'em down with SD's WAAAAAmbulance Thomas

I love that BlueNCers are keeping the pressure on the hood and the puppetmaster. Rec'd!

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

If the JLF is so, so against big gummint and such champions for personal property rights ....

why have we not heard from them speaking out against the OLF?

Hmmm....?

Hello? Bueller?

Hell, there's even a Puppet organization

that Kieran Shanahan runs that's all about property rights advocacy. Hood has written about it once or twice over the past five years. It must be some weird combination of uber-nationalism and Libertarian schizophrenia that has them remain silent.

Shanahan's useless organization hasn't issued a press release in six months.

Pope might be silent

but other conservatives are not.

CSE, which is fairly similar to pope in terms of actual ideology was against this before Anglico.

i see that

about the only thing they have done lately on any issue was put out a press release praising that mayor who got the award from the governor.

i would suggest avoiding the "what have they done for me today?" question because their opposition provides credibility to the claim that this is a non-partisan issue.

Today?

I'd settle for last year.

They shouldn't care what I think of them, Blue. They should do the right thing. I didn't decide to be in favor of Site C just because they once opposed it.

It IS a non-partisan issue . . . except for the fact that the two North Carolina Republicans who could do something about it aren't.

oh i know

they shouldnt care, but i dont want them coming on here (again) and saying you are an idiot because they opposed it first.
