BlueNC's blog Comments Iraq meltdown Post by James Protzman. I tried to call in to the Dianne Rehm show today, to ask why they/we still haven't put forward the three state solution for Iraq (Kurdistan, Shiite, Sunni), which should have been done about fifteen minutes after the dumbass-in-chief declared victory. We were blinded back then by the American-centric idea that everybody can live together in harmony if they just want it enough, and it appears we are still blinded by that. And this current conflict has the potential to spread to the entire region. Hell, it already is. Syrian insurgents and Iranian regular forces are streaming into Iraq right now. p.s. sorry I've been offline today, had to shovel and tote a bunch of sand. Thanks for delivering the sand to the NCGA so that the GOP legislators can put their heads in it. Presuming that's what you did, anyway. :-) ------------------------------------------------------- "What I see from the folks who are opposing our agenda is whining coming from losers." -- Thom Tillis That's actually a great idea... Sounds like a job for ProgressNC. Maybe we can get an ostrich (or emu) as the NCGA's mascot. :) Neverending war Post by James Protzman. Moral Monday for All! Like! June 23 is going to be the Big One. Mega Moral Monday on steroids. Be there. Food for thought Two "big picture" articles that got me wondering where the US - and North Carolina - are headed in the next couple of decades: *The US is the most ideologically separated it has been in over 150 years. *Liberals rate their representatives and leadership more slightly center than they rate themselves. Republicans, on the other hand, rate their representatives and party leaders much more liberal than they rate themselves. Not only are we further apart than ever before, conservatives are moving off the map in march to the right, making any kind of dialogue or compromise impossible even within their own party. This is why I argue for "more rope" Until the crazy shines in all its glory, we won't be able to start pulling back to the center / left. Let's give them all the rope they want, and truly let them hang themselves. The risk, of course, is that crazy wins at the end of the day. And that's a risk I'm willing to take. It doesn't seem like the numbers are there, does it? I have a general sense that roughly 15 to 20% of people are off-the-charts whackos (and unfortunately, they're high-turn-out voters). Which means we need to mobilize the 80% who have at least a tenuous grip on reality. And if I'm wrong, well fuck it. I'll just keep my head down, protect my children as best I can, and let the rest of our god-forsaken country go to hell. You can lead the ass to water, but you can't make him drink. I think the political chasm has 2 main causes 1. The right wing media aka Faux News and it's ilk. 2. Gerrymandering. I doubt Cantor would have lost in more reasonably drawn district (or not ever been elected). VA GOP drew the district and it bit ole Eric in the right cheek. Environmental Defense Fund http://signon.org/sign/an-end-to-gerrymandering The third factor ... I would add to that the money thrown into the political arena by big money players like the Koch brothers or the gun industry. In recent years, it's gone beyond donating to campaigns to setting up organizations that work in parallel to the Republican party, doing many of the things that parties traditionally do - fundraising, polling and even recruitment and training of specific candidates. That alone has forced the Republicans to go more "hard right". From the Guardian Post by Sandra Hesketh Howerton. New legislative building rules knocked down in court Breaking news at WRAL: A Superior Court judge agrees with the NAACP - some of the new rules to limit protestors are too broad to be enforced and a restraining order has been issues. "There was no measurable evidence there was any actual disruption," Holmes said of the protests. Holmes also questioned the authority of the Legislative Services Commission, a panel of lawmakers that drafted the new rules. The rules aren't created by statute or under the Administrative Procedures Act, he said, and they exist only when legislative leaders choose to enforce them. "It's a constitutional mess," he said, noting that top lawmakers were invoking powers of the executive branch to create the rules and use their own police force to enforce them. "These are unconstitutional rules promulgated by an unconstitutional entity." Forward together Post by Nancy Brown. Not one step back! Not one step back! ------------------------------------------------------- "What I see from the folks who are opposing our agenda is whining coming from losers." -- Thom Tillis BlueNC on Daily Kos Every now and then, one of our posts is featured on the excellent progressive-state-blogs roundup written by Meteor Blades at Daily Kos. It's a labor of love that doesn't get the readership it deserves, but I read it every week. It's a great way to see what our brothers and sisters are doing in other states ... and it's always inspiring. Check it out. PS A hint about who got featured this week: It's the sleaziest member of McCrory's cabinet. So many options to choose from ... :( They left out my name this time They usually get it right, so I guess I shouldn't complain about it. Nice work bluenc, scharrison and/or whomever. Although we believe that "sleaziest member of DAG McCrony's cabinet" remains a hotly contested race. ------------------------------------------------------- "What I see from the folks who are opposing our agenda is whining coming from losers." -- Thom Tillis Happy Father's Day, gentlemen! I hope each of you has an absolutely magnificent day! *************************** Vote Democratic, the ass you save may be your own. Gracias, Amiga I had fun today, even though I was swimming in my ex-wife's husband's pool. ;) It sounds weird, but we get along pretty good. Plus, Holli and Ryan (and my mom) were there, and I would stand on the surface of the sun to spend time with them. It doesn't sound all that weird ....and I know what you mean about spending time with the kids and your mom. I rarely see my girls at the same time now and it is just awful. *************************** Vote Democratic, the ass you save may be your own.
