Republican Tracker caught videotaping Lillian's List fundraiser attendees and their license plates

A Republican tracker was caught videotaping attendees at a Lillian's List fundraiser. He also taped the license plates of cars parked outside the event.

Trackers are fairly commonplace. Democrats hire them too, so we won't pretend to be shocked. I just think it is fun to turn the tables on him.

Thanks to Greg Flynn, we know a little bit about our new friend. According to his license plate cover - if you can trust these things - he is or was a brother at Sigma Tau Gamma. While there are plenty of chapters in the U.S., there are three chapters in North Carolina - at UNCG, UNCC and ECU. His car was purchased in Raleigh from one of the Crabtree dealerships. He drives a gray Pontiac Grand Prix.

I'm sure he's a nice enough guy...once you get over that whole voyeur thing he has going on.

Greg goes all in

Now we probably know more than we ever wanted to know about him.

Just curious ...

... but if you've got the license plates of some cars - and you're not a member of law enforcement - what can you do with them?

I thought that only members of law enforcement could do look-ups of license plate numbers.

I'm not really sure

I guess they may just be tracking them. They could create a database of all the plate numbers and start connecting faces/names to them and know which events/fundraisers people attended.

Some people might be intimidated knowing they are being tracked - especially if they are private citizens. I'm used to seeing trackers attached to candidates/campaigns. This is a new one for me.

I know this is a common practice with campaigns, but it's a little creepy when you've got a mysterious male "tracker" photographing attendees and license plates at a fundraiser, probably attended by many women, to elect women to office.

Next time they might want to send a female, so it doesn't look like some kind of sex creep. Then again, if it's the Republican party, I'm wondering where they would find a young female to do this kind of work.

It would appear

that there are ways for regular folks to get information about the people associated with a license plate. Google it.

Can't find anything that says that this practice is illegal (although perhaps he was trespassing), but it's disgusting and creepy and intimidating and inappropriate and it should stop -- by embarrassing this guy and his party if that's the way to do it.

If he is on a public road

he is fine to videotape or photograph what he would like...though...common sense tells you to avoid taking pictures of other people's children. He would also need to be careful if he tapes into or toward private property using a zoom lens. Then you get into privacy issues.

I'm surprised....

....he wasn't exercising his right to open carry an assault rifle too.....

He's really a nice young man.

Republicans are our opponents, not our enemies, they are misguided, not evil.

Talk to him, he is getting over being rejected from so many Democratic Party events, but if you follow him outside, and speak with him, you will find out that he is just doing his job.

He told me about his fraternity, the rules rejecting GOP from NCDP events are similar to theirs, so he understands.

At this point, we greet like old friends when I see him, he is not a creep. He is a nice, polite young man who just needs some education.

We should all give him a little, he is really very reasonable and intelligent. Give him the truth, and he may be open to it.

Sorry, it's still creepy

And considering the way groups like Civitas have openly attacked certain people on the left (Gene Nichol, for one) and have tried to get hold of their e-mails and such, this guy's behavior is far from harmless.

When I covered that open-carry gun-nut gathering in Greensboro a couple of years ago, I was tempted to take pictures of all the out-of-state license plates to show how few actual NC'ans were in attendance. I didn't do it because I felt that would be taking my opposition to their viewpoint several steps too far.

Groups like Civitas

also like to compile databases of people, and combine and correlate lots of personal information and then publish all that.

Big-brotherish. Intimidating. Creepy.

I'm sure he's a nice guy

...but that doesn't make what he's doing any less creepy. Like I's just kinda fun to turn the tables on him. Maybe he can find a better job than paid stalker?

Perhaps the guy is nice

but his actions remain creepy and inappropriate.

And the fact that we now accept the other side's trackers as par for the course is disheartening. Yes, both sides do it, but that doesn't mean it's a good thing. It will continue to escalate and will go too far (perhaps it already has).

He is not a stalker, and maybe he can't find another job.

Given the situation due in no small part to the NCGA actions in the last 18 months, young men his age have difficulty finding work of any kind.

Try talking to him about that next time you see him.

He will not discuss issues, probably by instruction, but he does listen. He will talk about almost any non-political issue.

I am not just talking about this one young man, either. If Democrats want to win next fall, we need the vote of young people like him, so we need to educate them, and be sure they understand their problem finding jobs is due to a stalled economy made worse by the NCGA in Raleigh.

We need to educate the voting population about regressive taxation, student loans and tuition hikes. We need to tell them about our platform and explain that our ideas favor their chances of a better future. Most young people are issue oriented, not party oriented, so only by talking issues can we win their votes. For instance, we need to point out that DENR regulation has been gutted, LGBT rights have been denied due process, they will respond favorably to ideas like that.

Instead of vilifying this young man as an enemy, use the opportunity to educate him, and turn an uneducated opponent into a knowledgeable voter. Most will choose the Democratic candidate if they understand that the Democratic Party represents their own best self interest.

I don't disagree we should reach out

to young voters, but this guy isn't right off the street or right off the campus. He's already been groomed and selected as a GOP operative, no matter how nice and polite he's been with you in the past. You try to swing him to our side you'll be wasting your breath, and probably giving him something to joke about with his frat-boy compatriots. Best to save that for somebody who is truly open to suggestions.

Other jobs are available

Here are some.

Maybe he's not technically a stalker, but taking photos of people and their cars and their license plates so that your employers can use that to go after those people who have done nothing wrong is not a job I would take.

This guy is working for the enemy and he's doing nefarious and creepy things. Maybe he's quite personable and polite. But we have better ways to spend our time than trying to persuade people who spend their days trying to damage Democrats to vote for Democrats.

NSA offers Kid GOP Stalker a Job?

No Doubt the GOP kid was in " Spy in Training" for the up and coming NSA Spy Season...

We heard

that you start out with license plates, then move to cell phone and then Internet spying.
