Tata's DOT sends out alert on "women drivers" and "Obamacare"

The McCrory administration's inept hiring practices continue:

"Women drivers, rain and Obama care" were causing problems on the beltline Wednesday afternoon, according to a traffic alert from the North Carolina Department of Transportation. "Stay home," the alert advised.

"The individual violated procedures by failing to turn off the external feed while testing and for the inappropriate test message content. The contractor was let go immediately for this action," DOT officials said in a statement.

It was a stupid mistake, but what's even more stupid is the idea of making emergency messages like this automated in the first place. Road conditions change continually, and an incorrect message can cause more problems (and danger) than no message at all. A labor-saving system isn't "efficient" if it can't do the job properly.

Opportunity knocks

what's even more stupid is the idea of making emergency messages like this automated

Perhaps there's an opportunity for a little job creation here. Maybe not to the tune of $85k or more for a political crony, but certainly for a few people to monitor the system and type messages manually. And don't forget the proofreaders!

I could do it

Although drivers in the state might find themselves having to dodge unnecessary hyphens...:)

Heh, you too huh?

I even hyphenated my daughter's first name. ;)

Stupid mistake indeed

But it also seems to speak to the atmosphere that I presume is likely to exist at DOT. Tony Tata, conservative author and former Fox News wannabe, might think that Obamacare and women drivers causing traffic problems is humorous, and so the people he surrounds himself with might think in the same way.

It would have been just as stupid a mistake to make up fake test messages that said that Ted Cruz, Rand Paul and gun nuts were to blame for traffic problems. But that's not what they did. They blamed Obamacare and women.

I don't mean to read too much into this, but "birds of a feather" and all that.

It's not just DOT

I used to attend what are called Utility Coordinating Committee meetings in several counties around my region. There was always a good bit of political talk before and after the meetings, much of it right wing in nature. The worst offender of all, oddly enough was the chair of the meeting in the most liberal county around these parts, Orange. The sexist, homophobic, misogyny that spewed non-stop from that guy's pie hole was more than could take. After the first meeting I never went back. We are quite literally surrounded by idiots here.
