Weekend Wound Up: Open thread

From an email sent by one of our more inspiring and progressive legislators.

In our Democratic Caucus meeting before opening session, two new Members of the NC House of Representatives, Angela Bryant and Annie Mobley, received their "commissions" from the Governor. These new members were replacing the late Howard Hunter and Ed Jones (moved over to the Senate). To see in one fell swoop the number of African-America women increased by two was an unexpectedly emotional event. Progress marches on in NC more than in most Southern states, though it is often at a glacial pace. But how wonderful it can be to witness the moving of a glacier!

Speaking of glaciers, what have you done to stop the Navy's OLF today?

Talked to Boylan yesterday

He thought, incorrectly, that the Navy already gave up on that site. This morning I emailed him the info I emailed Shuler's office. (his email addy is joeb at ncleg.net )

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

I've previously faxed my OLF letter to every

member of NC's congressional delegation. Yesterday I followed up with emails to Dole, Burr, and McIntyre, and to State Sen. Boseman and Rep Justice. I have a call in to McIntyre's office to find out what his stance may be.

I think someone who has Easely's ear needs to get involved.

Morning Ex: Off-gassing

Got a lot to do today so I'll be out for a while. Thought I'd post the Morning Ex here.

Science equals politics, at least for today as we read the headlines saying global warming has man-made causes and prepare ourselves for the counter-argument that is sure to come. A thousand Neros rosin up their bows.

For instance, a nice long search of news stories on the UN global warming debate yields this quick reaction from the flatlanders:

During the month of February 2007, World Ahead will accept proposals for manuscripts on the topic of global warming intended for children aged 6-10. Manuscripts should deal honestly with the subject, utilizing provable facts about the nature of our changing world while debunking the fabrications, hysteria and anti-growth agenda propagated by the far left.

While I'm off-gassing let me point out that today's N&O has a flyover of blogging politicos. While there are some insights offered by the elected officials mentioned it's another story about blogs with only a vague mention that they allow for comments and dialogue. Maybe I'm easily irritated, but what MSM98 doesn't seem to get is that the online Web diaries known as blogs are not one-way-top-down communications--not a new form of television.
I'm also amazed at the ever changing history of the Internets. This update, from Gary Pearce, skips over the vast-right-wing-conspiracy as if they were nothing:

Pearce said the Triangle's political bloggers are centered in Orange County because its politics tend to be more liberal.

"With conservatives, it's been talk radio and Fox News, and progressives and liberals seem to be more drawn to the Internet," Pearce said. "I can't explain why that is."

Me neither.

I Can Explain

"With conservatives, it's been talk radio and Fox News, and progressives and liberals seem to be more drawn to the Internet," Pearce said. "I can't explain why that is."

With talk radio and Fox news the conservatives can have their thoughts delivered to them prepackaged. They don't need to think.

Progressives and liberals can do their own thinking (and writing) thank you very much. ;)
