Cumberland school board speaks out on charter bill

Sacrificing the many in favor of the few.

"We are completely opposed to this bill, as we believe that this bill provides funding to charter school students at the expense of students educated in traditional public schools," said Carrie Sutton, chairwoman of the county Board of Education.

As mentioned before, if we weren't in a recession with its associated strain on education dollars, the wisdom of this bill would still be questionable. But with that factor in play, it's recklessly unwise.

And when you're looking at managing a huge school system like Cumberland's, this craziness:

For example, existing law requires a charter school to have a minimum of 65 students. The new law would delete the minimum enrollment requirement.

is enough to make you want to scream.
