Dan Besse announces for Lt. Governor
Although it has been "known" in Winston-Salem circles since October, Dan Besse, city council member, has made his bid for Lt. Governor official.
His web site actually has fairly detailed information (but someone needs to help clean up the fonts).
He introduces himself this way:
I believe that North Carolina needs and deserves leadership committed to the ideals of economic and educational opportunity for all, and conservation of the clean air, water, and land on which we all depend.
I have pursued these aims through over two decades of professional work and public service--as a public interest attorney for poor families; as an effective state-level advocate for clean air and water and public health; and as an elected local and regional leader.
I am not a part of his campaign, but as someone who ran for office in Forsyth County this fall, I can share my perspective below the fold.
Dan has been at nearly every event, luncheon, and function locally even before he was running for higher office. He is one of those guys who always shows up.
He was elected via shoe leather, hand written notes, a home computer database, and postage to all he contacted. My first significant help from Dan came at the Progressive Dems candidate training about a year ago. Dan taught door to door. And much more.
Read the website details of his experience in life and in office and you will see that "city council member" really sells him short.
Dan is a true progressive yet has been very effective in this relatively conservative state and county resolving competing economic, environmental and justice concerns. The energy and the environment is his biggest issue, but as somone who ran for school board, this gets me fired up:
The lessons of Brown v. Board are still true today: a system segregated by race, ethnicity, and economic class inherently generates inequality. That inequality appears in the resources made available to those schools. Concentrations of parents and families with less resources, and less opportunity to provide volunteer time, result in reduced opportunity for students in those schools. Too often, schools in those circumstances continue to fall ever farther behind. We must work to break this cycle of neglect.
Dan's biggest obstacle may be the ever pernicious "electibility" meme. But if he can get to enough doors, websites, and e-mail inboxes to get the small army of fellow doorknockers he needs, we could have someone truly effective and progressive in state government.
I know this might sound like a sycophnatic ad of some sort. You'll just have to trust me; it's not. Dan has no idea I am writing this and I have not said more than "hey" to him in quite some time. Nor have I ever promised to help his campaign.
It's just that when you actually know someone, have seen them in action and they are all they claim to be publicly, it's worth putting in a good word.
Now, if one of ya'll who knows computers can help him with his fonts . . .

Thanks for the heads-up, Deac.
This is going to be one crowded primary. I appreciate getting all the background and personal perspective on Dan. He sounds like a good guy all around.
Please invite him over (after he gets his website cleaned up :)) for a chat.
One more thing . . .
Ross:
Is there any chance Dan would study the OLF issue and come out publicly (in a big way) against Site C?
We need one courageous politician to step up and force others to respond. So far they're all sitting on the sidelines. I know many read this site, but none have used the knowledge to lead the charge. A candidate speaking up and calling out all the other candidates would force reporters to follow-up and find out where people stand.
Of course, Mr. Dellinger could also jump in, as could Mr. Smathers. Wouldn't it be interesting to see the Lt Gov candidates taking the lead on something!
Let me know what you think.
Yes
Surely there is "a chance" he would do that. My first thought this morning when seeing your post about needing a bill writer was that Dan could do it or help find people to do it.
His experience includes:
N.C. Climate Action Plan Advisory Group (2006—present)
N.C. Environmental Management Commission (1993—2005)
N.C. Sedimentation Control Commission (1994—2002)
N.C. Coastal Resources Commission (1985—1993; Chair, 1985—1990)
N.C. Emergency Response Commission (1987—1992)

Thanks
I'll send some links to him. Can you do that as well? Just a little nudge to improve those "chances."
:)
Will do
You educate on the specifics (I confess to not following the details). I will nudge him by arguing this would be good for him politically, bringing him up to speed on "BlueNC Power" etc.

OLF
Anglico, I appreciate your inviting my comments on this important issue. I am opposed to the Outlying Landing Field, which I believe would cause serious harm to the people and the wildlife of our state. As mayor of one of North Carolina's great small towns, I believe the state must work to protect residents of all its communities. The Site C proposal would endanger the livelihoods and the health of North Carolinians who have called the region home for generations.
I am impressed by the opposition local leaders, who have a better understanding of this issue than any of us observers living elsewhere, have mounted against this plan. This issue is yet another example of why the state must empower cities and towns to determine the fate of their own communities.
Thank you again for your interest in my position, and I look forward to continuing the conversation.
Pat Smathers
"Local leadership, statewide"
Thanks Pat . . .
Wouldn't it be great to have a press release that says:
I know you didn't "slam" but the PR guy in me can't resist a provocative headline.
:)
I bet
The first candidate to get some serious press out of this and meet with these people will have some pretty darn impressive and committed volunteers for life.

Too bad Moore and Perdue aren't out front.
and then of course, there's Mr. Easley.
Save Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.
I'm delighted for the opportunity to add my voice on this site to those opposing the proposed OLF location near the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge (a.k.a. Site C). To put the matter bluntly, it is hard to imagine a worse placement for that facility. It's bad for the migratory waterfowl; bad for the farmers; and dangerous for our Navy pilots. The brass who continue to blindly push this hound of a bad idea need to pull their heads out of the sand of base-placement politics, and relocate the proposed OLF to a safer site with lower adverse impacts.
Their stubborn insistence on this poor siting choice reminds me of President Bush's wrong-headed policies on Iraq: a persistent unwillingness to listen to the voices of reason either within the armed services or the affected community at large.
Let me complement my colleague Pat on reaching the same conclusion.
Before I sign off, I'd like to also thank Ross Smith for his kind words of support. As Ross said, I didn't know it was coming-- but I do appreciate it.

Thank you, Dan
Thank you for joining in the conversation.
Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.
Well
that is a quick response.

New press release headline
This is shaping up to be a killer press release . . . and I'll write it!
