Stalin would be proud
While this purge is disturbing as hell, I'm really having trouble understanding how this is even possible:
Isn't the makeup of the Supreme Court codified in the (NC) Constitution? I know they've been making noises about possibly amending such, but what kind of "balance of power" would we have if you could just add new Justices at the drop of a hat?

Welcome to the corporate state. They have to feed the beast.

Sad, but constitutional
Article IV, Section 6 of the North Carolina Constitution establishes the membership of the North Carolina Supreme Court and provides that "the General Assembly may increase the number of Associate Justices to not more than eight."
Of course it's a naked Court-packing plan, but it's perfectly constitutional.
this is another power grab
this is a breathtaking power grab, definitely. the current board members have been working together on important matters that concern every citizen's safety and well being. they are chosen for expertise, and reflect a balance of views now, they are not partisan picks.
we the people do not want the Art Pope machine to take over our planning and safety net boards and commissions. the Art Pope machine already has the Governor's mansion to control future openings. it already has the legislature to weaken our laws protecting us from sprawl, pollution and high power and insurance bills.
this power grab could set a terrible precedent, and cause the people of NC real harm right now, and into the future.
Angry? Hell yes, I'm angry
Almost angry enough to start shooting Teabaggers.
Something they might actually understand.
Grrrrrrr
