DC Pundit All Wet

Chris Godzilla at the Washington Post writes with a level of confidence that occasionally exceeds his level of knowledge. Today's report on the US Senate in 2008 includes this strange paragraph:
North Carolina:
Following her disastrous performance as the chairwoman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee in the 2006 cycle, rumors of a retirement by Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R) continue to circulate in the D.C. Dole will be 72 years old on election day 2008 and had hip replacement surgery earlier this week. It's also not immediately clear that Dole would have a path back into leadership even if she won re-election to a second term. If Dole retired, Democrats would likely turn to Gov. Mike Easley (D) who will be term limited out of office in 2008. Rep. Bobby Etheridge (D) has also toyed with the idea of running for the Senate in recent years and might find an open seat irresistible.
Democrats would likely turn to Easley? Hmmmm. That's news to me, given the fact that Governor Easley has said: “I would find the legislative process frustrating. I just don’t think the Senate would be the highest and best use of my skills.”
Dear Mr. Godzilla: What's with the "Bobby" thing? Seems kind of familiar, don't you think? And by the way, it's okay to ask around before you put your reputation on the line with uninformed pundo-babble.

Speaking of horrible mistakes...
Guess who Hillary is talking to about strategy?
Great, another "centrist". Our other "centrist" was doing this yesterday.
No Democrats, just Republicans - including Joementum.

All these "double down" guys
are totally off their rockers. Pouring another 20,000 or 30,000 soldiers into Iraq for another six or nine months will make NO difference in any way, shape or form. More troops will be killed, more Iraqis will be killed, and then we'll end up declaring victory, leaving and letting the place descend into chaos anyway. If anyone needs an example of the intractable conflict we're facing, just look at the unqualified failure currently happening in Afghanistan. The Taliban are back after laying low for a couple of years) and the situation is growing worse than ever.
They can lay low for a couple of years . . . or even a couple of decades . . . because the freakin' LIVE THERE. Unless we intend to occupy both countries forever, we are on an unending trip to hell with no return ticket allowed.

Does this mean he was wrong
when he put NC-08 in the top races most likely to flip in '08? :)
Chris isn't my favorite. I just don't want him to be wrong on that one little piece.....for obvious reasons, of course.
Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

I don't want him to be wrong on anything
but he clearly is just pulling stuff out of his you know what in this case. I'm very certain you have ten times more understanding of what might or might not happen in NC-8 than he ever will.

The Larger Issue
I can forgive his mistake on the Easley thing... only a few days ago I myself was wondering if Easley might consider the race. However the larger issue here is the decline and fall of Elizabeth Dole.
Almost overnight she's become a cypher in the Senate's Republican caucus, is now having health problems, and is not getting any younger. The Democrats have a great opportunity to pick up her important seat if only we can identify someone who's an attractive candidate that can compete in the general election.
In terms of our electoral chances, I'm not sure if we'd be better off, or worse off by Sen. Dole's departure. She does own the advantage of incumbency, but some young, energetic and well financed Republican could come along and make a much more substantial adversary than Elizabeth Dole.
If "Bobby" is considering a run, more power to him. I wonder how he'd do?

I'm still hoping...
that Brad Miller's visit will lead to some juicy tidbits.

"Bobby" has won statewide races before
and would be a strong candidate for Senate. I wonder if he is really interested.
And don't you just love how they are suddenly making excuses for why Liddy might lose - she's old, she's sick, she led the decline of the RSCC. Not to mention that her record as a senator representing NC has been horrible.
