Did Elizabeth Dole lie about more than her residency in 2002?

Earlier we discussed Dole's residency problem. We're not talking about the fact that she doesn't actually live here, we're talking about the fact that Dole must have lied to become and remain a registered voter in North Carolina. She knew she did not intend to live in North Carolina permanently and once back in her home in Washington, D.C., Dole would never return to North Carolina to live permanently. North Carolina allows for residency outside the state for registered voters only if they plan to return to North Carolina to make it their primary residence. To my knowledge Dole has never communicated she intends to return to North Carolina to live.

Now we find out from Jim Morrill on his blog at the Charlotte Observer that Dole lied about her finances in order to raise money for her campaign in 2002.

"TAKE A LOOK AT THIS," she wrote in an e-mail to thousands of supporters in October 2002. "My opponent loaned nearly $3 million of his personal wealth to his own campaign We expect him to use even more of his personal wealth to finance his negative television and radio ads."

"I do not have that kind of personal wealth," Dole wrote. "So, to continue setting the record straight I must be able to count on the generous support of friends like you."

At the time Dole was worth millions. She is still worth millions. As we learned not long ago, Dole had no problem lending herself $3 million this time around.

Liddy Dole, you lie like a dog.

(The previous statement was said in my most refined southern accent.)

This shouldn't surprise us.

Once you start lying, it's easy to continue. Residency, personal wealth, no one really cares, right? Do what you have to do to get elected.

Pheh.

It's also easy to lie when the media doesn't call you on it

Dole seems to be shell shocked that she's getting called on it this cycle.

"Only the most deluded of us could doubt the necessity of this war." - John McCain

Can she win?

The closer we get to election day and the more I catch myself feeling confident about the races, the more nervous I feel about what could happen.

It is just very difficult to believe that Liddy Dole could be reelected, yet if McCain still has fighting chance in this state, so does Dole -- even with her horrendous record.

I guess pundits are already drafting scripts for analysis of what went wrong or right for either scenario, but by the time it's all over most of us are going to be too spent to want to hear about WHY it went one way or the other.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing

I agree 100%

We are not letting up on the ground. It's all out. Nothing left on the field.
