Drew For Deeds releases first campaign video

The Democratic Party in Buncombe County has changed plenty since 2004, and one of our biggest change agents is Drew Reisinger, the sitting Register of Deeds. Reisinger is running for election after winning appointment last February to serve out the remaining term of longtime register, Otto DeBruhl, who retired last year.

Reisinger’s winning that seat was a pivotal moment in local Democratic politics. Party insiders long sought to protect the line of succession to DeBruhl’s coveted job. But it was no accident that Drew Reisinger won the party election to finish out the term.

Since coming on the scene in 2008 with the Obama field campaign, Reisinger has worked successful local races, including Scrutiny Hooligan co-founder Gordon Smith’s race for city council in 2009. When Patsy Keever decided to primary Rep. Bruce Goforth in 2010, Reisinger took the reins as campaign manager and mounted a grassroots field campaign that trumped Goforth’s heavy fundraising advantage, knocking him out in the primary. Goforth resigned, allowing Keever to win the appointment to fill out his term and run as an incumbent. With Reisinger running her campaign, Keever handily defeated Republican Mark Crawford in District 115 that November.

When Otto DeBruhl decided to retire last year, Reisinger quickly assembled a team of seasoned campaign veterans and spoke with virtually every party Executive Board member, making his case to succeed DeBruhl and personally asking for their votes. The final voting was tight. DeBruhl had preselected a longtime associate as his successor, but the then-27-year-old Reisinger’s efforts, reputation and campaign experience paid off, and he won once again. (Full disclosure: I gave his nominating speech.)

Now Drew Reisinger himself has to run for election county-wide, and his efforts in this down-ticket race are no less vigorous and innovative as his work in office, as the video explains. This is how change happens when progressives stay engaged and in the game. Send Drew your best wishes and something more.

Drew supports marriage Equality

I never realized how much a register of deeds mattered until Drew talked with me about his work to support marriage equality. He can't legally offer licenses to same sex couples, but he has worked with local activists to make his office a hospitable site for this powerful protest:

Then he needs to sign onto the marriage lawsuit

... that the Guilford Register of Deeds is on.

It's great that some candidate can mouth the words, "I support marriage equality," but when it comes time to put his official actions where his mouth is, Drew goes all George Wallace on gay citizens of Buncombe County.

Drew may be many things, but don't tout him as some great marriage equality ally.

He could have done -- and should be doing -- more with his office instead of standing in front of citizens and denying them their equality.
