2012 electoral map by (NC) county

Courtesy of Politico. If you hover your cursor over each county, it will open a box that shows current Presidential tallies. Won't know until later how up-to-date this thing is, but previous experience has shown their stuff is pretty solid.

You can also change the map to reflect Senate/House/Governor/ballot measures by clicking one of the tabs on the left side.

This is awesome

Same site, national map. But I may have to come back to it later, becuase the early returns are jumping around like crazy.

NC: 140,000 new voters have already voted

Some good news from DailyKOS:

"In North Carolina for example, nearly 140,000 new voters have already voted."

Fingers Crossed

Not very optimistic for my home state, but stranger things have happened than NC going for Obama again today.

Chatham

My daughter in law did some chauffeuring in Chatham County today and can claim two additional votes for Obama and straight-ticket Dems.

My wife and sister-in-law are out doing the same tonight here in Orange.

Twiddling thumbs

Got this by email today. Some pretty funny stuff ... if you happen to be a word nerd.

A paraprosdokian is a phrase or sentence that leads us down the garden path to an unexpected ending. "Where there's a will, I want to be in it," is a paraprosdokian. Winston Churchill loved them.

1. Do not argue with an idiot.
He will drag you down to his level
and beat you with experience.

2. The last thing I want to do is hurt you.
But it's still on my list.

3. Light travels faster than sound.
This is why some people appear
bright until you hear them speak.

4. If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

5. We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.

6. War does not determine who is right - only who is left.

7. Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

8. Evening news is where they begin with 'Good Evening,'
and then proceed to tell you why it isn't.

9. To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism.
To steal ideas from many is research.

10. A bus station is where a bus stops.
A train station is where a train stops.
On my desk, I have a work station.

11. I thought I wanted a career.
Turns out I just wanted paychecks.

12. Whenever I fill out an application, in the part that says,
'In case of emergency, notify:' I put 'DOCTOR.'

13. I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

14. Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down
the street with a bald head and a beer gut,
and still think they are sexy.

15. Behind every successful man is his woman.
Behind the fall of a successful man is usually another woman.

16. A clear conscience is the sign of a fuzzy memory.

17. You do not need a parachute to skydive.
You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

18. Money can't buy happiness,
but it sure makes misery easier to live with.

19. There's a fine line between cuddling
and holding someone down so they can't get away.

20. I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

21. You're never too old to learn something stupid.

22. To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first
and call whatever you hit the target.

23. Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

24. Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

25. Going to church doesn't make you a Christian
any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.

26. Where there's a will, there are relatives.

Thank you

I was in dire need of a laugh, and I got several out of that. :)

Binker is looking for voting stories

Did you vote today? Got anything to report? I stopped by a couple of precincts and everything seems smooth and quiet. Didn't see any long lines.

How about you guys? What's the hap?

None I've heard of

I heard that turnout was a little up compared to 08 so far, but no major issues.

I spent most of the day phonebanking and doing other get out the vote so I wasn't at the site itself long, but my husband was there for a few hours. He told one person about their ability to cast a provisional ballot, and gave out a lot of materials, but that was it.

I've been very proud to be Vice Chair of our precinct this year from our pre-primary canvassing to register voters, GOTV, and fight the amendment all the way to today's activities, and Ruth has done an amazing job as Chair. A few flash backs:

Foushee meet & greet (our district got redistricted out of Insko's territory):

Ted getting read to vote at campus (I voted there & encouraged others too to help us keep on campus in the future):

Orange Dems meeting (just posting b/c we had a good turnout from Booker Creek at the meeting):

Anybody got a good suggestion for election results?

I usually go to the SBOE site ... but they don't seem quite ready to report.

Here you go:

It's on the BOE site, but I didn't navigate to find it, I just jumped the link from Twitter.

Thanks man

Just updated the OP with the link. Much appreciated.

What is the best possible scenario for state level elections?

Is it more or less a given how the NCGA will turn out? What about council of state? What are the races to watch? The judges I take it.

Does Dalton have any shot at all?

Best possible scenario?

The R's get together for a Duke Energy victory party and their hotel is swallowed in by a rogue time warp that transmits them via wormhole to the other side of the universe where they are found a new theocracy and leave us the fuck alone.

Short of that, Sam Ervin is the only thing standing between King Pope and the illusion of democracy in the Old North State.

Council of State

Should win Public Instruction; Auditor; Tresurer. Possibly Lt. Governor.

Angus King ... a left-leaning

Angus King ... a left-leaning independent ... going to the US Senate from Maine.

Would like to see more left-leaning independents. They're more reliable progressives than many ConservaDems.

Dead heat

From the NC BOE as of 8:44 p.m.:

Obama/Biden (DEM) 1,360,142 49.35%

Romney/Ryan (REP) 1,365,198 49.54%

McCrory

Just called for McCrory.

That does it, I'm moving

From my living room to my bed room. If I'm going to witness the collapse of civilization as we know it, I might as well be comfortable. o><

Looks like Kissell lost

with about a third of precincts reporting, looks like there will be one less blue dog giving the tea party cover

Agreed

Sure caused me to think three times about who I supported in this cycle.

CBS has Wisconsin, Ohio, and New Hampshire as "lean Obama"

If Obama wins those, the best Romney can do is tie.

Don't go to bed yet--Tom Campbell

Tom Campbell from NC Spin on FB:

Jeanne Bonds report is correct. Because of a technological issues the early vote in Wake County cannot be counted until today's vote is counted. Thousands of votes could change the outcome of some races. Don't go to bed just yet.

Romney continues to hold a lead in North Carolina but national pundits say that unless the Republican wins Florida there is no way he can win the election.

Martha Brock

Best news of the night from Massachussetts

Warren defeats Brown. Meanwhile, North Carolina demonstrates to the rest of the country that progress can never be taken for granted.

Yea for Warren

from the Washington Post:

...Brown’s loss comes less than three years after his special election win signaled the start of a Republican wave in the 2010 election.

Warren’s strong performance will surely make her a part of the speculation when it comes to potential 2016 Democratic presidential candidates.

Martha Brock

The Senate is looking rather good for Dems

with 2 pickups so far and good defense in other states. The knuckle draggers in Indiana and Missouri went down in otherwise red states.

Looks like Art Pope bought himself a judge, too

Congratulations, Newby. Now you can start recusing yourself on every matter that comes before the NC Supreme Court. Starting with redistricting.

Ohio goes for Obama

as does the rest of electoral college. At least we'll continue to have a president and US Senate to hold the NC theocrats in check.

Legislative Wipeout

Looks like the Republican gerrymandering plan was a masterpiece of work for them.

By my count, Democrats are now outnumbered 32-18 in the Senate and 77-43 in the House.

Democrats now hold just 36% of the seats in the General Assembly.

Election Night party pics

Though our state has challenges ahead, it was a great night nationally (especially for LGBT equality), and a great night with friends:
