Elizabeth Edwards for Senate? Could this ever happen?

I was just at Political Insider and saw this gem:

Elizabeth Edwards, insanely straightjacketed the last time around, has been set free and has turned out to be the Presidential candidate spouse who outshines the actual candidate. If Edwards loses Iowa and drops out early, Elizabeth Edwards should take on Elizabeth Dole for North Carolina's '08 Senate seat.

I had never considered this. Obviously, I'd prefer that John Edwards not lose, but should that happen...is this possible?

I normally don't like what I read on Political Insider--it feels very pundity, very horseracy--too much like conventional media and not enough focus on substance. I check it every once in a while just to see what's there.

I think Elizabeth would be an excellent candidate, especially should Grier decide not to run. But here are the things:

1. Will her health permit it?
2. Does the timing work out with filing deadlines, fundraising, etc?
3. Would she consider it?

I take for granted that she would beat Dole into a pulp, outshine the gubernatorial race, and be a catalyst for turning NC progressive.

This is obviously not something for short term consideration, but we very well may find ourselves with Edwards losing the presidential primaries and NC lacking a strong Democratic Senate candidate. So, hypothetically, should that happen, what are your thoughts on this?

Won't happen...

I saw that, too. As cool as it would be, it just won't happen. If JRE gets knocked out, my guess is that she would want to go back to normal life and be with her family. There would be too many health questions, it would be such a nightmarish schedule, etc. - you'd have a hard time talking her into it.

Not to mention the fact that she'd have to work really hard to put together the kind of network she'd need for a Senate campaign. Personally, I think Grier Martin would be a stronger candidate, because he could campaign as an outsider. We'd lose that narrative if Elizabeth is our candidate.
