Eva Ritchey: "Hungry for people to do the right thing"
In 2006, Henderson County Democrats, on their way to total defeat, trimmed 5000 votes off their usual Congressional vote deficit. They so drastically decreased Charles Taylor's lead in this heavily Republican County, their numbers are widely cited as the key to Heath Shuler's impressive victory.
In 2002 and 2004, the Democratic congressional candidate received 35 and 38 percent of the Henderson County vote. In 2006, Henderson Democrats delivered a comparatively whopping 45% to Shuler.
Eva talks about the keys to her county's success, what she calls "becoming a value-added party."
However, even with all that success, Eva has been asked by even her allies within the party not to run again for county chair. And, in two weeks, when she runs for vice chair, indications are that she may be defeated by a candidate recruited specifically to run against her.
Doug Freeman, current vice chair who plans to replace Eva as chair, calls it a difference of opinion on strategy. She has led several public fights against the all-Republican Henderson County Board of Commissioners. Her public plans to sue the board in conjunction with the American Civil Liberties Union, has her former allies including former party chair Paul Donahue, concerned that Eva's strategy of a strident public presence could "set us back ten years."
But Eva counters with the idea that "if you're only comfortable leading from a place of being supported, . . . you're not going to accomplish some of the tough jobs that need to be done." This must-see 12-second video gives you a taste of how strongly Eva feels.
Eva lays out her case for leading from strength of conviction. She says people are "hungry for leaders to do the right thing. After all, if what you compromise for is not right, then "it's morally on quicksand and it's not going to last anyway."
Eva has become so widely known in the community that after her recent defeat for county commissioner, she was the subject of ridicule on the radio station, WHKP. This if from the November 27, 2006 Hendersonville Times-News:
The WHKP host made derogatory comments about election results and said not all was bad -- at least Larry Young beat Eva Ritchey. Then he laughed, yelled a few unintelligible words and played the song Ding Dong the Witch is Dead!
Doug Freeman says: "My idea is let's win elections. Let the candidate take on the issues. I told Eva, you can hammer away at any issues you want. Until you elect commissioners, it's not gonna change as long as you're on the outside looking in."
As president of the North Carolina Pro-Life Democrats, Eva explains the harm done when the Democratic Party holds its members to a litmus test. She quotes a 2004 Zogby poll concluding that 43% of Democrats are pro-life.
According to Eva's research, of over 80 county commissioners in the 11th district, only 8 are women. Eva discusses why women need to become more involved and how in this video:
However, Eva concludes, when it's all said and done all factions should "look for the things that unite us." Click and listen:

Excellent DQ
The interviews just keep getting better.
I remember Eva from the NCDP Convention this past July. She was very hurt that the rest of the party would not even give a nod to the pro-lifers. By the time it was all over I was feeling a bit sad for her.
Thanks again for the excellent reporting on strong women in North Carolina.

gives one much to think about. The whole "pro-life" thing is a hard one for me. Maybe I'll write about it sometime. If I were ever going to be a single issue voter, this would be my issue. But I'm not, so I suppose it's moot. I'll take a pro-life D over a pro-choice R any time.
But I'd rather have a "life-choice" Dem who has strong convictions around the issue . . . but recognizes those convictions are fundamentally spiritual or religious in nature - and should not be imposed on others.

Eva just wrote me this about the Supreme Court decision:
(I've had some somewhat intense arguments with her about abortion. And I've found that she doesn't pigeon-hole me and I just can't find any way to do the same to her. I thought her comments might interest you, A):

We're "in an orbit outside of the Democratic Party" in large part because we were disinvited by the Old Guard.
I think that Progressives would be well-served, at this point in our Party culture, to grow patience and to wrest control from the intransigent Old Guard. It's a real bitch sitting in those lousy meetings, accomplishing nothing week after week after week, being discounted and disregarded by people who know less than they ought.
Carol Peterson is a great example of an Old Guard Republican who doesn't even begin to understand the depth of her ignorance to progressive issues. I'd be shocked to find myself at a meeting and have her lend my views any creedence whatsoever.
I guess we'll eventually have to go to the stoopid meetings and bear with the patronage system until we can dismantle it.
If the Old Guard wants to prevent its own irrelevancy and stagnation, they'd open the doors wide, acknowledge the amazing energy and innovation in the progressive movement, and say "let's join together to make this a better place."
They won't, of course, because they're fat and happy. We're just discontented and disenfranchised, frustrated from too many years of being blown off by the people we now have to go sit next to in these godawful meetings.

Fabulous rant
I SOOOOOOO agree with this.
I used to sit on a town council in what most would consider a pretty progressive community, but dang it wore me down. I can't imagine what it would be like to be in cities where shady bullshit is part of the natural order.

Here's the video that inspired the rant
Screwy refers to a video I didn't post on BlueNC about progressives being marginalized in the 11th District. (It was more of a regional comment and there was so much to choose from for her!) See the video either at Scro Hoo's or here:
As to the rant: you know I'm with ya, Screwy!

I'm so glad you posted this
Thanks. It all makes perfect sense.
I think she's right. I know I don't have the patience. That's why I left the Navy. All it was about was doing time, staying in long enough to outlast the other people.
And the ones who had that patience? Sheeesh, I could barely stomach being around them.

Attention Momoazio!!!
THIS is why we're running for offices at the convention. This is why we're going to be part of the executive committee. And THIS is why, no matter what happens, we're going to keep going back to those meetings. Yes?? (Please say yes. I don't have the patience to do it alone)

ATTENTION EVERYONE!!!!
At your county convention ANY registered Democrat can run to be a delegate at the district convention. At the district level, you can elect a leaders who will organize trainings for candidates, for GOTV for precinct organizing, for phone and door-to-door canvassing. You can elected a district director who wants to help counties do strategic planning.
You can start planning all this NOW. You don't have to be a delegate to the county convention to still get involved, go to either conventions and be part of making changes happen.

I ain't no steenking tortle
And my hare is rabid.
I hear you about not being able to stomach the folks who can bear with the plodding minutiae of these interminable self-love sessions.
Now, when I'm king of the world, we'll have brief meetings. We'll do most of our business via email and teleconference. I will crack the freaking whip and tell folks that they are going on too long, too tangentially, or too narcissistically. I run meetings now, and those suckers are tight. Not a minute wasted.
If only... if only...
In a perfect world,
all elected officials would have to pass a course in Robert's Rules of Order before they could begin their term in office. It can be a pain in the ass, but it sure can make a meeting run smoothly.
And gavel, gavel, gavel.

Which seat are you running for?
Carol's? David Gantt's? Who else will be up? Oh, Republican Chair Nathan Ramsey, that's right . . . Now, that would be interesting, no?
