Even the NRA Takes Aim at the Navy

You know you're in a world of hurt when you're the US Navy and the freakin' National Rifle Association is on your case. But that's just what the NO OLF Brigade announced today in Washington DC. Babs Barrett, of the steadily improving McClatchy news organization, wrote the story.
WASHINGTON - The outlying landing field that the U.S. Navy wants to build in eastern North Carolina could have national and even international implications for wildlife and sports enthusiasts, according to a coalition of activists who spoke this morning at a news conference in the nation’s capital.
Attending the news conference were representatives of 10 organizations, ranging in ideology from the conservative National Rifle Association to the liberal Audubon Society. All were there to oppose the Navy’s chosen site for the landing field.
“It is not often you see us all aligned so clearly and so publicly,” said Chris Canfield, executive director of Audubon North Carolina, speaking at the National Press Club in Washington.
The Navy wants to put the landing field on a site in Washington and Beaufort counties, close to the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge and the wintering grounds of tens of thousands of migratory waterfowl.
“This is a globally important site for wintering waterfowl,” said Sean McMahon, a senior policy specialist with the National Wildlife Federation.
Scott Sutherland, director of government affairs for Ducks Unlimited, said the Navy’s impact on the birds could affect flocks all along the Atlantic flyway, including birds with roots in Alaska and Canada.
You have to hand it to those peskly NO-OLFers. Pulling together guys with shotguns and hippy environmentalists and family farmers all into one powerful coalition. These folks are kicking butt all over the Navy lately.

Just one minor complaint, Ms. Barrett. What's with the "liberal" Audubon Society? Liberal about what? Protecting birds? Why even bother with those simplistic descriptors? You can do better than that.

anyone who wants to save birds for some purpose other than killing them later is a tree hugger. didnt you know that?
Also, note to Burr and Dole, you have already lost this issue, and no matter what you do now it will be too little to contain the political damage that we will cause you. you might stop this plan (i doubt it) but you wont stop us from placing an anvil on each shoulder with the letters: O L F

Wait until the Patriot movement and The Gun Owners of America move in on the site to save it from the Navy tyrants...,..This might be the first time in American Naval history that they are outgun in a swamp. You think the Brit navy roll over to the Iranians wait until you see the Patriot movement in action.
Good on the NRA...and everybody working to stop this debacle.
