Fred vs Bill

If you've driven recently on US 70 from Raleigh to Kinston, you faced the extremely unpleasant burden of seeing gigantic billboards plastered with the grinning mug of NC Senator Fred Smith, a proud "conservative" who makes a living slopping at the public trough for highway contracts.

And of course you won't be surprised to see on his website that one of his big issues is ... you guessed it ... building more highways! If only the mean old liberal Democrats would get out of the way and let his company pave over the rest of the durn state, all would be well and good. (You really have to read where Fredly whines about "liberal Democrats" three times in two short paragraphs. It's a hoot.)

But the very latest addition to the senator's over-engineered site is a high-flying slam at the vaunted profession of his most likely gubernatorial opponent, Mr. Bill Graham, the ambulance-chasing government-hater from Salisbury.

The biggest obstacle to real tort reform in North Carolina is that the trial lawyers, a wealthy special interest group, has the Democratic Party in their pocket. The result is that we have a system which promotes getting lawyers rich instead of providing affordable health care. Increasing insurance premiums are driving good doctors out of business and frivolous lawsuits are clogging our courts – which slows down justice for those who need it most. The doctors that do remain in business must pass those costs onto the patients making health care extremely expensive, out of reach for many residents of North Carolina. Businesses are also suffering worker compensation lawsuits that prevent them from expanding and lower economic.

You can just see all the holier-than-thou bulloney spilling from Fred's he-man lips as he sets his sites on Bill Graham, a neocon trial lawyer who's spending a boatload to plaster his face all over North Carolina too. Graham was quoted earlier this year in the Conservative Voice when only Judson Cox (edited - RP) was paying attention:

Graham: I've been around politics for a long time. I have worked on Senator Helms' staff and supported good candidates like George W. Bush, Elizabeth Dole, Richard Burr, as well as many of our Republican Members of Congress. I have for years supported state and local candidates. I will certainly continue to support good candidates and I will see what may happen in the future.

Many in Raleigh say you will/should be our next governor; how do you respond?

Graham: Running for Governor is a possibility I am considering. It is too early to make that determination. I will make a decision on that sometime early next year. For now we want to advance innovative ideas for the good of our party and the people of our state.

Innovative ideas? That should be interesting. I sure hope they're more innovative than supporting "good candidates" like the moron in the White House or the Very Senior Invisible Senator from North Carolina. I can hardly wait to see how fast little Billy runs away from his gushiness over George Bush. Can you say "back-pedaling?"

In any case, there you have it. The Asphalt King and the Anti-Gas-Tax Ambulance Chaser going head-to-head in the Party of Greed 2008 primary for governor. Should be fun.

Whatever you do! Do not interfer with this campaign between Swift Fred [lacking sense] and Billy Boy [ Got more money than sense] In fact we should encourage Nathan Tabor to become their campaign consultant at the same time.

I repeat! Let them fight over the dead political body of the GOP State party and hold their next convention in a phone booth as I predicted 2 years ago with Mr Chairman [Marcus Kindley] calling the roll by a pre-paid Cell card.

" Mr Chairman! Point of order!!"* General Coach Fred

" Mr Chairman! My Point of order was first." * Billy boy

"Both point of orders overrule at the pleasure of the Chair due to due to the lack of Intelligent Design by both candiates, And will the Security of the Guard remove the communist or person of interest from Orange County as a blog reporter"* Eistein Chairman Marcus

" Mr Chairman! Can we close the phone booth door now. The Fire Chief said we have reach our limit of a two party line now." * John Hood

" Mr Chairman! The Police are here and have a warrent for the arrest of parties involved in a party of male twisters in strange postions to the public"* Close adviser to Art Pope

" The convention is now dismiss until next year due to lack of party members and nobody paying for my billiant political contract services with the citizens of North Carolina" * Mr Chairman

Gawd amitey.

Fred Smith and Bill Graham are the top Republican hopes for Gov'nah in NC.

ummm.

Almost makes a Christian person feel sorry for the NCGOP.

Almost.

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

Thanks, Robert

I see you've edited the entry to reflect comments we received from Nathan Tabor, who was not the source of the interview with the Ambulance Chaser.

Pretty funny that Nate would go to all the trouble to write BlueNC just to clean up a little attribution error. That's like slopping through a cesspool and worrying that your shoe's untied.

Wait a minute...

Can somebody fill me in here on what the Mangum Group does, exactly? Are they involved in road construction? If so, looks like we should be pulling for Fred to win so we can hit him with some nice opposition research in the general. If he's anything like everybody else in his party (Vice President Halliburton), he's making sweetheart deals and lining his pockets.

Has anyone looked into this?

to Magnum. They're involved in many big-time construction and development projects, and have plenty of big gummint contracts. That's why Fred is so keen on building more roads . . .

I predict Fred will stomp the doo-doo out of Bill Graham. Having been annointed by Puppetmaster Pope, Graham will face considerable backlash among moderate Republicans who Pope threw under the bus this year.

I Think He Has a Few Words Wrong -

It should say:

'"The biggest obstacle to real reform in North Carolina is that the developers, a wealthy special interest group, have the Republican Party in their pocket.'"

First, we don't need more roads until....

the projects we have started are funded and finished. I'm tired of half-assed funding for projects that drags them out 10 years longer than they should last.

We also don't need more roads - We might need new roads and we might need new projects, but they should only be approached with an eye to coordinating with public transportation/light rail. If/when a road is widened (I'm thinking I-77 in Charlotte for example) it should be for it to allow a rail line up to meet the needs of those folks who don't have to have their own car for work each day.

We have widening projects that are just finishing that wouldn't be necessary if we had adequate light rail/public transportation.... They were started so long ago, light rail wasn't in the picture. It probably should have been, but that's a different rant for a different day.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.
