Fruitloops Part Deux: Follow Your Nose!

This week, Rep. Larry Brown sent out an e-mail denouncing gay people as "queers," and making fun of the Speaker of the NC House for receiving an award from Equality NC. He also refered to gays as "fruitloops" (activists happen to be sending him some). As we said the other day:

Brown was hinting that some legislators are gay by calling them "fruitloops," not calling gays in general fruitloops. If you know anything about North Carolina politics, you know that the only legislators who attend the Equality NC gala will be Democrats.

Well, it seems like a candidate for NC House has just as much of a problem with Equality NC as Rep. Larry Brown and his collaborator Rep. Paul Stam. Steve Henion, running against American Hero Rep. Grier Martin in NC-HD-34, wouldn't mention an endorsement for his opponent unless he thought it was a bad thing:

Grier Martin III is now endorsed by Equality NC http://bit.ly/bSdzLk #NCGOP #NCPOL #CONSNC #TCOT #NC34 #NCGA #TPP #TEAPARTY

Are the Republicans running against Equality NC in addition to equal rights? It was Rep. Stam that announced Speaker Hackeny's ENC award to the Republican caucus, and Stam is unafraid to equate same-sex marriage with polygamy. Candidate Henion released a similar tweet concerning Rep. Martin's Planned Parenthood endorsement, and Republicans have run against Women's rights organizations for a long time.

If you follow your nose to Henion's website, you find a candidate who supports "a Defense of Marriage Act in North Carolina." Organizations like Equality NC have kept North Carolina from passing such an amendment, and perhaps that's why they're on the recieving end of attacks from the GOP - even though battling human rights is a losing issue, morally and electorally.

What happens if you follow your nose to other Republican legislators?

  • House Minority Leader Paul Stam - (NC-HD-37) - "The 2007 General Assembly failed to address the State Marriage Amendment - signed by a majority of House members. In 2008 we must decide whether North Carolina will allow polygamy and same-sex marriage? The issue will inevitably arise as people move here from Massachusetts."
  • House Minority Whip Thom Tillis - (NC-HD-98) - "There is no one that can dispute the value of a family that has a man and a woman in a home raising children."
  • Representative Marilyn Avila - (NC-HD-40) - "A society can only be as strong as its respect for life and honor of family and tradition. The Marriage Amendment must be passed in North Carolina. Without this constitutional protection, we face the threat of losing the bedrock upon which our society is based."
  • Representative Justin Burr - (NC-HD-67) - Stands for "Preservation of Traditional Marriage"
  • Representative Hugh Blackwell - (NC-HD-86) - "Hugh will support a constitutional amendment to define marriage as between one man and one woman."
  • Representative Bryan Holloway - (NC-HD-91) - "Amend the NC Constitution to define marriage as only between one man and one woman ... Always support family values and protect against religious persecution of Christians"
  • Representative Ruth Samuelson - (NC-HD-104) - "I am a primary sponsor of the Defense of Marriage Amendment bill which would allow the voters of North Carolina to decide how marriage will be defined in this state. This may not make me popular in some segments of the North Carolina constituency but I strongly believe that to preserve the health of our families we must clearly define marriage. Numerous studies have shown that children do best in homes that have both a mother and father present. This is not to imply that other family structures can’t provide a safe and constructive home, but we must recognize the positive foundational societal influence of the traditional family."

Gay marriage is equitable with polygamy. Gays threaten the bedrock of our society. And so on.

When you follow your nose, the Republican House Caucus in North Carolina doesn't pass the smell test.

Grier Martin III Endorsed by Equality NC

I was just on Rep. Martin's website. Can someone tell me why Grier Martin doesn't list the Equality NC endorsement on his website? Rep. Martin supports an incredible and necessary liberal agenda! Support of gay rights and gay marriage are vital in creating a tolerant and diverse society. This is the raison d’être of Equality NC! Why is Mr. Martin not openly acknowledging this endorsement? He is similarly one of a few legislators endorsed by Planned Parenthood. I applauded when his work in the House was recognized by Planned Parenthood last week and rewarded with an endorsement. Why is this not listed on his site? Mr. Martin should be slamming the GOP, Brown, his opponent and the rest as he waves these endorsements proudly!

And why does Rep. Martin's whole campaign (mailers, TV and website) revolve around a 6 month stint in Afghanistan? Granted he was a lawyer, he was only there for a short period and did not actively participate in the atrocities perpetrated there. Fair enough, but why does Rep. Martin feel he needs a Rambo image?

Rep. Martin understands the critical role government must play in the battle against corporatism and religious fanatics. He knows our involvement in Afghanistan is misguided and has said we should pull out. Why not run on his record and ideas which will build a better NC rather than a laudable tour in a misguided war?

If all military members who go to Afghanistan are heroes then OK, we have a lot of heroes. I'm down with that. The notion of a hero is a little less impressive then, however, and hardly a qualifier for elected office. To me Grier Martin is a NC Hero because of his record in the legislature, not because he went to Afghanistan for 6 months. I want this hero to run on his heroic record. In making a big deal of military service 6 years ago seems someone is advising Rep. Martin that your record will not get you back to the House to continue your needed work.

I believe many of our best Democratic candidates are being advised in this manner. Let the GOP cowards run races that way. I want our courageous Democrats to stand up for what they believe in, educate the people and make it clear that we need to take drastic measures now to protect ourselves against an increasingly dangerous right wing. Rep. Martin needs to get his "opponent" on a stage, mop the floor with him and make it clear to voters what we are up against.

Too many of our best and brightest appear to be unwilling to do this. I don't get it.

Why can't Steven Henion balance a checkbook?

Do you really want to play this game on this blog?

We can revisit Steve Henion's passing of worthless checks and court-ordered payments if you like.

Take your baiting campaign elsewhere.

I know who you are

And if you continue to misrepresent yourself as a Democrat who supports abortion and gay rights and such, everybody else is going to know who you are, too.

I'm tired of dealing with Goddamned lying sockpuppet trolls on this site. Either 'fess up and deal with us honestly, or get the fuck out of here. There is no third thing.

Grier Martin Endorsements

Don't care who libsrule is, he could be Martin's opponent for all I care. He raises a valid point. Went to Martin's site. He lists all endorsements. Chamber of Commerce and Teachers are up but No Equality NC or Planned Parenthood. Why? Change in this country has come from those willing to stand up for change. The President's stands are not popular now but he is pushing on. He is a model of the courage we need to be showing now. I've gotten all these Martin mailers too. Enough with the uniform already. Thank you for serving but that's not why I will vote for you! If Martin thinks he's going to get teabaggers to vote for him he's crazy. And that's not why I have scheduled time to go canvass neighborhoods next weekend.

You were warned

You are libsrule, and you're also Marty McCaffery, a Steve Henion supporter. You're also an MD working at UNC, who should know better than to try to pull some silly crap like this.

You're also banned for creating and using multiple identities. Don't come back, Doc.

Thanks for managing this

I really can't understand why people behave this way. I guess they think it's all a big game or something. They're almost always men, they're almost always liars, and they're almost always the same few people. It's kind of sick.

They think they're being clever,

but in reality, they're just lying. It's hard enough to figure out what's right and just in the world of politics without inserting this "false persona" thing.

Where does Tillis Stand on the Amendment?

Of all those quotes Tillis seems to be the only one who didn't no gay marriage allowed.

House Minority Whip Thom Tillis - (NC-HD-98) - "There is no one that can dispute the value of a family that has a man and a woman in a home raising children."

I read that as no gay adoption allowed, and Boseman has already put a crack in that.

Will Tillis support & push for a marriage discrimination amendment?

It seems no question

based on that initial quote in this blog that Stam will.

Is there anyone else in contention for the head house gop spot now? If so, where do they stand?

Drop the delusions

This is THE top priority for Taliban Stam and Taliban Stam will rule the roost. Nothing is more important to him, except for possibly turning abortion into a capital crime.

As I said on another thread, if you are gay or fighting for gay rights in North Carolina, the game is over.

Sorry to be so harsh, but that's how it is. Taliban Stam is a radical Christianist who believes his interpretation of the Bible is what counts

It doesn't matter that his religion is based on the myth of an innocent young woman being raped by a magic ghost. All that matters is the fact that he will be Speaker ... and gays will be screwed.

After realizing the House GOP

unanimously sponsored the discrimination amendment, I realized that any hope for leadership not making it a priority is unrealistic.

But maybe some of the newbies in the house GOP aren't so bad. And even if all the newbies in the House GOP are for discrimination, they'd still need 4 Dems.

District 4 (Duplin, Onslow)- Jimmy Dixon - 2.92%
District 41 (Wake)- Tom Murry – 7.38%
District 46 (Hoke, Scotland, Robeson)- Gaston (G. L.) Pridgen - 4.5%
District 49 (Franklin, Halifax, Nash)- Glen Bradley - 3.5%
District 77 (Rowan)- Harry Warren – 0.94%
District 116 (Buncombe)- Tim Moffitt - 11.64%

But maybe some of these new members, where the elections were close, where they didn't as far as I'm aware run on the marriage issue, and/or where their districts have some lefties (parts of Raleigh, Apex, Cary, and Morrisville for 41 & Asheville for 116). Maybe there is hope.

In the Senate the 3 GOPs who didn't sponsor this bill last time, still seem to have their jobs.

This means they can't get to the 3/5ths majority in the House or Senate without Democratic help.
