The good news re: the Komen affair
Apparently across the country as well as here in NC, lots of folks who had never given to Planned Parenthood decided it was time after hearing about the first Komen Foundation decision last week.
We all heard about Mayor Bloomberg who can easily write a check for $250K, but lots of other folks, who remembered being treated like a human being by a Planned Parenthood at some point in their lives were also moved to write smaller, but as important, checks.
Come on, don't be messing with an organization that has taken care of more than one in five women currently living in this country!
Just for the record, the Planned Parenthood in my neck of the NC woods, PPCNC, in 2010-11 served more than 7,000 men and women, provided more than 1,200 breast exams, conducted more than 8,000 tests for sexually transmitted infections, and dispensed more than 19,000 contraceptives. They run three professionally staffed health clinics in Durham, Chapel Hill and Fayetteville. More than 70% of their patients lack health insurance to pay for the care they receive. So many are served because of a Justice Fund created by PPCNC supporters.
We all should be giving as much as we can both in political and financial support for the important work this organization does.
In the spirit of full disclosure, I'm proud to be on the PPCNC board.
