NC Republican woman say lay off Sarah Palin. Hilarous!

Lay Off Palin!

"The resolution also criticizes 'negative media reports about Governor Sarah Palin (which) are insulting to all women who aspire to political office.'"

That is funny. It's not the negative reports that are the 'insult!' :)

A Smut-Filled Tome

This is really creepy.

The club also has a life-size cardboard cut-out of Palin.

I wonder if they bow to it.

Bow to it?

I bet they all try to get their picture taken with it. Plus they probably have a spare in the closet in case this one gets wet from all the drooling and sucking up.

Google blogs about Transgender Awareness Day

I thought it was worth noting that the most influential tech company in the world is loudly commemorating Transgender Remembrance Day. Maybe that whole "don't be evil" thing has some substance to it.

It is good, isn't it?

Slowly but surely - the country will get there.

Don't for get to water your turkey

and baste your Christmas tree Or something like that.

Every year on New Year's Eve

We ritually burn our Christmas Tree when the clock strikes midnight. We tell people it's because we don't want to take anything old into the New Year. Really it's because it makes this HUGE fire, the flames reach up to 20 feet up into the air and it's better than fireworks. Well, that's a lie too, it's legal and sending fireworks into the air isn't. Good times :)

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

Progressive Discussions

My town did a bonfire one year.

They opened the concession stand down at the ballfields, we gathered about 50 old Christmas trees (late-January) and just lit it up. It was freakin' awesome!!!!!!!!!!

Freakin awesome..but...

....bad for the environment.

Better to sink them in the local lake or pond for fish habitat, or out in the woods somewhere for all kinds of good habitat as the dead trees decay.

Just call me spoilsport!

we take ours to the woods, now, usna77.

I just walked past our tree from last year the other day. It's fitting in nicely with the rest of the woods behind our house.

We usually save one piece of the tree and use it on Feb 2 (Imbolc in my religion)to start a fire with. At that fire we bless seeds for the coming spring. It's a very special time for us.

It was 1978.

There was no environment.

That was a ritual in the Pittsburgh suburb I lived in

It really was a great community time. Even though my son was only 6 the last time we attended that, he still remembers -- mostly being able to take off his coat (because the fire was so hot), drink hot chocolate, and play with his friends on the monkey bars.

On the excitement of watching a dry Christmas tree burn...

I must concur.

Environment considerations would require us to develop an appropriate tax on the burning of a Christmas tree in order to maximize human welfare. The burning of the tree would be a negative externality insofar as it involves the release of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

To consider the cost to the environment we must take into account:
The size of the tree.
The prevailing weather conditions at the time of the burning.
The probable total effect on atmospheric CO2 emissions from burning the tree.
The climate impact of burning the tree.
The climate change's impact on human life and happiness. (this would have to then be quantified in some currency)

Here comes the tricky part - calculating the subjective benefit of burning the tree. Relevant factors would include:
The number of people in attendance.
The depth of tradition involved (start your Christmas tree burning traditions now... while you still can!)
The age of the spectators (children, and especially boys between the ages of 5 and 15 receiving the most benefit, obviously)
The vicarious joy experienced by the adult parents in knowing that their children are enjoying the fire.
The ample light provided by the fire - thereby reducing chances of accidents and violence that occur more frequently in the dark. (so in a crime-ridden neighborhood perhaps more benefit)
The danger of sparks causing additional fires and damage.
(others, I'm sure)

Clearly, before a carbon tax can be imposed we are going to need a LOT of federal grant money invested in researching these issues. After all, we want to maximize utility through government regulation!

I Like That Idea

If I used a natural tree, I would do the same. I'm famous for this post Christmas remark, "The tree up too long after Christmas is like having a dead body in the house..." A pyre of spent Christmas trees after the holidays going up in flames is very fitting. It invokes Vikings, Yule logs, the cold Nordic climes, Druids calling for the return of the sun and all that sort of thing.

Gov. Janet Napolitano on immigration

Gov. Janet Napolitano of Arizona is one of the few U.S. politicians who has managed to thread the needle of immigration politics. Napolitano, a graduate of Santa Clara University, stunned her party early last year by calling for National Guard troops at the border -- and later got them from President Bush. She won a landslide re-election in November in a state where illegal immigration was Topic A by campaigning on "real solutions to real problems," while watching prominent Republicans who called for more fences along the border go down to defeat.

Still one of the alltime greatest scenes on tv:

You can watch WKRP

on WGN (Chicago) on digital cable. It's channel 77 for me. They show a bunch of foolishness on that channel, including an old Canadian sit-com called, "Corner Gas", which is painfully stupid but also funny as hell. :)

I swear to God I did not know

turkeys could not fly!

Classic line, wasn't it?

I remember watching that episode when it first aired.
