Hairdresser Joe's Wake-up Call

This was covered in the open thread comments, but in the interest of throwing a bit more light on the subject, let's take a closer look.

Rep. Joe Boylan has been charged with driving while intoxicated. Highway Patrol troopers charged the Pinehurst Republican after he swerved off the side of the road, hitting a tree, in Cameron on Thursday, the Southern Pines Pilot reports. He was treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital.

In an e-mail, Boylan said the accident was a wake-up call. "This is the first time I have ever been charged with an alcohol-related offense and I promise that it will be the last," he wrote. "I accept full responsibility and am very ashamed of my behavior."

A wake-up call? You would have thought this alcohol-induced groping would have been a sufficient wake-up call. But no, Hairdresser Joe's not concerned about being tagged as a drunken lecher, he's only concerned when the injuries are his.

As you may remember, the reason Joe Boylan is even in the North Carolina legislature is because Art "the Puppetmaster" Pope wanted to settle a debt with Richard Morgan. Pope's 527 organization put a ton of resources into the fight to help Boylan beat Morgan, saddling We the People with another loud-mouthed, sexist Republican drunk in the General Assembly. Joe Boylan has been a joke from the moment he got elected. And now he's become a dangerous joke.

Thanks, Art Pope. You're a helluva Puppetmaster.

What is wrong with

moderated lechery? As long as the partner is willing, that shouldn't be a problem.

In all seriousness though, I find the excuses given by Boylan and his drunk driving counterpart Frye hard to swallow/ Get a cab or a DD it isn't hard to do and it just very well may save a life.

CORRUPT NC REPUBLICAN 08 JUDICIAL
DREAM TEAM LED BY DRUNKEN JUDGE

November 3, 2007

* Blames DWI on Mother-In-Law
* DWI Judge Doug walks to Judical Chambers from Atlantic Beach to Raleigh while on probation until April 08
* DWI Republicn Judge swears to make NC districts all Republican in 2010

By Greensboro N&R Editorial Editor Doug Clark

"Campaigns are already under way for 2008 North Carolina judicial elections. These contests are nonpartisan, but they're still political. Too political. In this state, judicial candidates are allowed to engage in political activities but within limits spelled out in the Code of Judicial Conduct.

Its very important Canon 1 says: "A judge should uphold the integrity and independence of the judiciary." Canon 3 A. (6) states: "A judge should abstain from public comment about the merits of a pending proceeding in any state or federal court dealing with a case or controversy arising in North Carolina or addressing North Carolina law ..."

Douglas McCullough is a judge on the N.C. Court of Appeals and an announced candidate for re-election in 2008. He's a Republican, as he makes clear when speaking to Republican audiences. One such occasion was Oct. 20 at Lake Junaluska in Haywood County. A video at McCullough's campaign Web site captures his remarks. He describes himself and two other candidates -- Supreme Court Justice Bob Edmunds and Court of Appeals Judge John Tyson, also Republicans -- as EMT, a team needed to rescue the judiciary. No problem with that. Then he says Edmunds' re-election is especially important because of legislative redistricting, recounting how Democratic gerrymandering has kept Republicans in the minority in the state House of Representatives. After the next redistricting in 2011, a challenge is sure to go to the Supreme Court, McCullough says, strongly implying that Republicans will get a better deal if Edmunds is on the bench. I believe McCullough's statements were improper, violating the spirit if not the letter of the Code of Judicial Conduct. Of course, there isn't yet a redistricting case before the courts. The next redistricting hasn't happened yet. But McCullough himself says there almost certainly will be such a case. While it's not technically a "pending" case at this time, it's a case that reasonably can be anticipated. I'd say, then, that this judge should have abstained from public comments about the merits of the case. I understand that McCullough said nothing about the legal merits of a potential future redistricting case. His concern had to do with the political merits.

Hence the suggestion that the Republican Party will get a better deal from Republican judges. (It follows that the corollary would apply: the Democratic Party will get a better deal from Democratic judges.) Sadly, that still may be true in North Carolina. But it ought not be. As the code says, judges should uphold the integrity and independence of the judiciary. They should apply the law with impartiality. Running without party affiliation should free them from allegiance to partisan interests. Voters should expect that, even demand it. They shouldn't want to elect judges with a predetermined disposition in political cases, criminal cases or any other kind of cases. I wasn't impressed by Judge McCullough's partisan remarks to Haywood County Republicans, and I hope that fair-minded voters will have the same reaction. Update, Nov. 2: The video has been removed from Judge McCullough's campaign Web site, but it has been posted here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-B8oANSdh9c Doug Clark.

Judge DWI Plea Carteret - 4/3/2007 A North Carolina Appeals Court judge has pleaded guilty to DWI charges in Carteret County. Judge John Douglas McCullough must pay a fine, perform community service, and lose driving privileges for a year as part of his sentence. McCullough blew a .12 in a breathalyzer test back in October. A spokesman for Judicial Standards says McCullough faces no formal charges related to his standing as an Appeals Court judge.

You know I have to add a couple of cents here.

Joe Boylan also collapsed on the floor of the NC Legislature one day last winter - they said it was the flu, and he was dehydrated. The rumor that was rampant in Pinehurst (where they know everything dontcha know) was that he was intoxicated. He spent a night at a hospital in Raleigh, and his wife, Linda (no relation to me) drove him home the following day.

It's been long rumored around here that he has a problem. If is, indeed, an alcoholic, I hope that this is the bottom he has to hit in order to get himself together. I've met his family, and they don't deserve this (no one does.)

As I posted in my comment on the open thread, there is a three way contest for Joe's seat in the primary. He's up against Lane Toomey, who is a well-respected conservative, which means I've never met him, and Jamie Boles, who is, as I said, one of the best-known and best-loved citizens in the county. If you ask people about him, they'll tell you "He's a good man." He's a local funeral director - and he takes good care of the families he serves.

With this new development, I predict that there just might be an upset in the Republican primary in Moore County.

Jamie has good and bad sides just like anyone. He is certainly a good funeral director. I am interested in finding out what his platform is, but the press has not reported anything and he doesn't seem to have a website(at least one Google can find). Toomey's platform sounds a lot like Boylan's. If all three end up saying the same thing, it will probably come down to who you "like" more, which will probably mean Jamie gets elected.

We were at Mac's Breakfast Anytime about 12:30 Sunday

trying (unsuccessfully ) to beat the Methodist to lunch. The place was packed so we had to take a table in the smoking section which overlooks the front area of the restaurant. The waitress had just brought our drinks when a man with a bad haircut shuffled, head down across my line of sight. I said to my husband, "that sort of looks like Joe Boylan". Sort of because he really looked.....unkempt, very, very casual. Did I mention a bad do? Really, it looked like a bad imitation of the Simon Cowell look on American Idol. He headed down the hall towards the men's rooms so the hubs didn't get a good look.

We were lost in conversation when hubby hisses, "that IS Boylan." We all looked up, I said "ew..."something and the son said "No politics on Sunday!" I didn't pay him anymore attention until the son read a headline out loud....."Boylan Arrested for DWI".

I didn't recognize the white haired elderly gentleman he and his wife were sitting with, but Boylan sat head down while he was being "talked to".

Although the Dems don't really have a pony in that race, there seems to be two other Reps that do and this just may be the beginning of the end of the hairdresser.

No doubt the hairdresser is a "dead duck" to the funeral director.

No doubt you were looking at God or Moses who was trying to straighten out the Hairdresser?

No doubt Max

I'm betting it was Moses though....I think he parted the hairdresser's hair!
