Heath Shuler / Charles Taylor Debate Friday

AC-T's John Boyle:

"Congressman Charles Taylor and Democratic challenger Heath Shuler will debate this political season – on the radio.

It will be the first debate Taylor, an eight-term incumbent, has granted a debate since a televised exchange with Maggie Lauterer in 1994.

The men will face off against each other on Matt Mittan’s talk show from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday on WWNC-News Radio 570 AM, according to News Director Jerri Jamison. The show will be simulcast on WMXF-1400 AM in Waynesville, which is also owned by Clear Channel Communications. The debate will also be Podcast through the radio station’s Web site: www.wwnc.com

Shuler Campaign Manager Hayden Rogers confirmed that Shuler would debate Friday. Taylor’s spokesman could not be reached immediately."

More below the fold...

This race is getting tighter. Charles Taylor has always been a strong closer, and this cycle, evidently, is no exception. Heath Shuler, thanks in large part to the same AC-T that endorsed him, gained the reputation of eschewing debate despite attending seven debates that Taylor wouldn't attend and despite having made it clear he doesn't campaign on Sundays. The AC-T again leaves the latter fact out of its story, preferring the vague "couldn't find time" to the accurate "doesn't campaign on Sundays".

Photobucket - Video and Image HostingBut that, of course, is neither here nor there. Heath Shuler will debate Charles Taylor on a renowned local conservative talk radio station. If you think I'm exaggerating, just look at the ancient picture of Taylor they've put up at their website. Taylor's face is much better suited for radio than it used to be, and he's got a quicksilver tongue to match. Shuler will need to clearly articulate the argument for change. Charles Taylor looks like this now ---->

Scrutiny Hooligans salute the candidates for giving the public the opportunity to hear their candidates debate. Charles Taylor could have attended the seven debates that he skipped and given us much more clarity as to his explanations for Abramoff, Ivanovo, CAFTA, national debt, Iraq War. But we'll take what we can get from serial debate dodger Charles Taylor. Heath Shuler has demonstrated his boldness throughout this campaign, and this move, only 5 days before the final vote, shows us again that he's the most serious contender western North Carolina has had since 1994.

Would you young people

stop doing these things in the wee hours? Sheesh! I can get up at 4am, but I can't stay up until 2am. Heading over to rec now.

I think the turnout of early voters in the mountains pretty much equals the rest of the state right now. Both parties are pouring it on. Keep up the good work.

And if, hours later, you're into clicking some more

Matt Mittan's show is pretty right wing

with several out-of-control whack-jobs that regularly call in. But he treated Patsy very well in 2004. Of course, Taylor didn't come on at all.

And, Screwy, don't you think John Boyle mean Taylor's spokesWOman, your honey, dear Debbie? Where IS she going to get a job after November 7th?

Or am I being too mean?

Sucker bet.

It's a sucker bet to do this now. Heath has nothing to gain and everything to lose. He should have put out a debate schedule a month ago and just hammered that Taylor was afraid to suit up and face him. Now, he's doing a radio debate which means no one gets to see how near-death Charlie Taylor is, what a sputtering dottering old fool he is, and it is on a conservative radio show, which I guarantee will ask questions using the conservative talking points and framing. Using their framing puts Shuler on the defensive from the word go.

You forget that Chuck can't talk

in complete sentences. At least not in any that make sense. And Shuler isn't going to lose any voters on that station. He can only gain from it.

It's impossible

It's impossible to be too mean to some people.

Maybe this out-of-control, whack-job Hooligan ought to be calling in, eh? Maybe I'll ask Taylor, "When did you tell your Mom you were abusing your power in Washington?"

Robert

um....those numbers are a homerun. Stanly county turns out 2:1 Republican ALMOST ALWAYS. For Dem turnout to even be close is a friggin dream come true. All the more reason to keep boots on the ground.

ooooooookay.

The BOE was unable to pull up early voting data from past elections yesterday, they were going to send me 2002 data today. I was waiting to post something until then, looks like I should have continued to wait.

Robert and SD, people should be cautious

Early numbers in the 11th are no different than 04. I'm hoping more dixiecrats are voting D but we must be cautious and keep working to turn out the voters we KNOW will support us.

There are rumors of Rs voting D and I hope that's true. Heck, it would be nice if most Ds voted D. But in the 11th big D turnout on the surface means absolutely nothing.

Robert...it isn't just turnout

Many, many conservative Dems live in Stanly, so Reps do typically vote in higher numbers, but they win by even greater margins because they pull votes from the Dem party. I think the close turnout is a sign that this year is going to be different. I will repeat that any good news should only be taken as a sign that we need to keep boots to the ground and the phone to our ears.

Taylor May Back Out of Debate

As of the 11pm news last night, Charles Taylor hasn't reported that be able to clear his schedule to attend the debate.

I guess he's got to wash his hair or something. Maybe he's having the Russians over for dinner or micromanaging his banking affairs.

Whatever. Taylor's a serial debate dodger.

I was gonna say...

A pint of whatever-you're-drinking that Taylor doesn't show.
