"Hello, I'm Calling With Information About Heath Shuler...."
Submitted by Lance on Mon, 11/06/2006 - 7:02am
According to metafilter (and Talking Points Memo, though I can't find the reference to NC-11), the NRCC is robocalling NC-11 households with a recording that begins with the title of this post. Then, when people hang up, they call the house back six or seven times. The idea? "I was going to go out and vote for that Shuler fella, but the bastard called eight times during dinner!" Does the Asheville Citizen-Times know about this? [They did.] Shouldn't they hear from you about it?

My Letter to the A C-T
(which won't mean much, I think, because of my Georgia address):
There are now several blogs report this
Americablog, Crooks and Liars, Firedog Lake and Daily Kos all have posts up about this. I think they've only reported in NY, CT, WY and a couple of other states. I didn't know it was happening here as well. The I think the DCCC has already filed a complaint and be considering legal action. I think it violates FCC rules.
NC-11 is referenced in the article
And shuler is quoted about the calls.
F*cking cheaters.

The Citizen-Times did know...
They ran an AP article about it last Wednesday.
The real question is - would the AC-T have reported about it if left to their own volition? I doubt it very seriously.
"we're banging pots and pans / to make you understand / we're gonna bury you, man"
Make a recording....
Need a recording of the Shuler calls. Will make an interesting juxtaposition with Taylor's public stance:

Good find, Will.
This would be a very great story for tomorrow morning's newspapers.
It gets worse
It's worse than that. In an AP article in today's Charlotte Observer:
Looks like Chuck coordinated a smear campaign with the NRCC.
Recording not needed.
I think the Western North Carolinians need to blitz their local media shows to find out why Charles Taylor is doing deceptive robocalls when:
1. They are immoral.
2. They are a danger (great diary on DKos about how these calls were limited because they interferred with 911 operation)
3. He says he is against them.
Forget the paper, get it on the six o'clock news tonight.
CountryCrats - my thoughts, my blog.

Let me rephrase that...
a recording would be great!!! But, in the meantime, the WNC media should still cover the hypocrisy, danger, and immorality of the Taylor robocalls.

I just sent the link for this entry
to a handful of papers. Please do the same.
I just sent a series of links to..

If you contact the media, be sure to comment on what a load of..
If you contact the media, please be sure to refute the following assertion highlighted in today's N&O (NY Times reprint):
The Dems, always ready to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
These push-polls and scam calls are distinctly different than television, print and radio ads BECAUSE THEY FLY UNDER THE RADAR!
By necessity, television/print/radio ads are PUBLIC. The targeting logistics behind these robo-calls can be quite sophisticated. Only a very small percentage of those receiving the calls will elevate their concerns to the point of getting any PUBLIC attention.
The slick insidiousness of these robo-calls is way beyond the common public distortions of a Vernon Robinson. Don't let the Democratic political operators off the hook - this is a completely different beast.

Here's the specifics of Shuler's race:

Wow! These calls are damnably cheap.

I'm guessing Mr. Conquest Communications
is going to find his ass in jail in a couple of months.
No jail time, I believe...
It appears Conquest is only courting a fine - no jail time. The penalties are so small, and in many jurisdictions, so difficult to assess that they can easily factor them into the "cost of doing business". A dirty business, but as Greg demonstrates, pretty darn lucrative.

The penalties in New Hampshire
seem to be more onerous than a small fine. At least we can hope.
I wonder if banning robocalls should be on the 07 legislative agenda here in North Carolina? Surely we can find a way to make this illegal, with a sufficient deterent to stop the insanity.
Pass the savings on...
This will be an interesting battle between Federal and local prerogatives. Wonder if the GOP will once again squash State's rights ;-).

There was a comment somewhere...
that Dems took the "Do not call" fine to court in 05 and lost because the federal law trumps the state law? It had no links and I have no idea what any of that means. But, sounds like more bullshit laws that IOKIFYAR.
CountryCrats - my thoughts, my blog.

The GOP is just doing what comes naturally.
Corruption and illegal activity is just SOP for the GOP. They will stop at nothing to retain power.
Direct dial
Not counting payments to individual phone bankers, the Taylor campaign has paid the following for calling:
Direct Strategies
106 E College Ave Ste 1100
Tallahassee, Florida 32301
10/16/2006 $5,636.62 PHONE CALLS
10/18/2006 $8,251.21 CALLING
I don't know if anyone caught my comment above but to repeat:
"Taylor issued a news release Sunday saying that if re-elected, he will seek legislation to prohibit automated political phone calls"
