Heroes of the highest order

The NC General Assembly presented two bills to the Governor's office yesterday, 03 April 2007. They are important for everyone, though unlike other Legislative actions, one wishes that the special interest group these laws serve were much smaller than it is.

HB 42: AN ACT to amend criminal Procedure laws affecting domestic violence victims and to require domestic violence homicide reporting as recommended by the joint legislative committee on domestic violence.

HB 46: AN ACT to determine whether security guidelines are needed for domestic violence shelters operated by state‑funded agencies and to provide, where feasible, secure areas for domestic violence victims to await hearing of their court case as recommended by the joint legislative committee on domestic violence.

Kudos and a grateful 'Thank you' goes to the NC Lege for taking up this matter and passing these bills. Such laws are essential legal tools, even though, sadly, one cannot wear them like a kevlar vest nor wield them like shields over one's children. Nonetheless, they do make a difference.

Our mothers and grandmothers did not have it so well.

When Domestic Violence comes into most homes, it is as someone else's heart-wrenching tragedy.

That is reality.

However, I want to turn attention away from tragedy, just for a moment, to triumph. Would you join me, friends and lurkers, in lifting our glasses and nodding our heads to my heroes.

To they who go unnoticed by all but those they help. Most of you will never know them as they look to me -- as heroes. They don't get rewards or medals or bonuses or cars or cruises or vacation homes for their work. They move quietly within and around the legal tools created by our lawmakers. They rescue and save lives in our midst, yet in our shadows.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket I'm talking about the undercover corps of volunteers and workers; the social worker, deputy, officer of the court, guardian ad litem, psychologist, doctor, legislator, teacher, administrator, friend, neighbor and family. Each one of them is a hand that holds up the crushed, the unsteady, the determined who flea their homes in mortal fear by the thousands every year. Together these heroes guide a woman through the long wilderness of rebuilding, one handing off to the next, until she can smile and move straight and strong on her own.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket It is not a short journey. For every year of destruction, a year of rebuilding begins on the day she leaves. And years down the road, the kindness and strength of those hands, seen and unseen, who held this woman up when she couldn't stand alone and shielded her children until she could shield them herself, remain with her.

They will always be there with her, forever.

They are truly heroes of the highest order.

When next you're wondering where your church, sunday school class, youth group, scout troop or club can help, call your local women's shelter and ask them what they need. You will add your hands to the many who hold up the unsteady. Each will know -- despite what their husbands told them for years -- that you do see her, you do care and you believe her.

Whether or not you know it, you will be there with her in triumph.

My wife's haircutter

was murdered this spring by her husband. She was trying to escape his evil grasp but couldn't.

Thank you for bringing these bills to our attention - and for the nudge on supporting local organizations. My first-ever board position 30 years ago was for the local shelter for battered women.

mmm ...

there but for the Grace of God ...

Good on you, A!!

Beautiful, Leslie. Simply beautiful

Thanks, SD

This is a subject I work very very hard to avoid, quite honestly. Thinking on it typically sends me into a funk for weeks. But I haven't had to delve into memory to talk specifics here, so I hope this will be different.

Apologies to all

for my incommunicado status.

My ISPs finally updated late this afternoon sometime. ;) Growing pains are good pains.

I've been talking on the phone to some folks and I had thought those conversations would meld into a post today, but it was not to be. Those conversations are interesting but they will have to wait a few days. These ratified bills would not leave me alone last night. They fell into my email this week and this post spilled out of me today.

I'm glad it did.

It's beautiful. I didn't get on until 11:00 and knew others would still not be on until tonight or later. Lance said last switch he was off for a day and a half. Oh my! Thanks for hanging in there and getting this posted. It really is beautiful.

It is so obvious that this spoke to you

the whole diary feels like it came from your heart. Thank you Leslie, this is one issue that really needs to have the spotlight on it. It's appalling that this exists in the world, but groups like these, those silent soldiers, deserve all the assistance that can be provided to help fight this predominately invisible battle.

Last night in my County Government 101 class we visited Social Services. These are not the evil people that are too often protrayed on tv. These are women who through their own journies in life have been brought to this field. They truly care.

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

I know ...

There are times I slip into feeling big -- looking back on the hills I've had to climb. Not everyone gets over them. Then I remember that I did none of that climbing by myself. None of us do.

Thanks, mo. ;)

It's not a story I often tell

Ten years ago - I was one of those women who needed a hand to hold, to escape. If it weren't for a neighbor who opened her door in the middle of the night and let me and my son in, I don't know where we'd be now. Never think that someone who appears strong and confident couldn't possibly be a victim. She could.

Thanks for the post, Leslie. And thanks for letting us know about the bills. These are good.

Thank you for sharing this

It's good for people to know.

Yep.

Thanks, lcloud. :)

It happens much too often

and this....

Never think that someone who appears strong and confident couldn't possibly be a victim. She could.

is oh, so true.
