N.C. Dems debate the meaning of 'covered in oil'
By Sean J. Miller - 04/15/10 10:46 AM ET
North Carolina Senate candidate Cal Cunningham seemed to be channeling Jimmy Buffett at a Democratic forum in Raleigh Wednesday night.
When the topic of offshore oil drilling came up, Cunningham said: "If you go swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, you come out covered in oil."
One of Buffett's most famous lines is, "Nibblin' on sponge cake, watchin' the sun bake, all of those tourists covered with oil."
Attorney Ken Lewis (D), one of Cunningham's main rivals for the nomination, was quick to pounce. His campaign promptly called for Cunningham to "apologize" to the governors of Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas for his "'covered in oil' slur."
"I think Cal has been listening to too many Jimmy Buffet [sic] songs: That's not what he meant by 'all of those tourists covered in oil,'" said Bruce Clark, Lewis's campaign manager.
A Cunningham spokeswoman said later that he was referring to the swimming near Galveston, Texas.

Called LA Gov. Bobby Jindal...
...But he was too busy handling this massive oil spill along his coastline to take my call.

Just an observation
With the possible exception of a few snow birds, the citizens of Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas won't be voting in North Carolina's Primary. Should Cal apologize to Jimmy Buffet, too? How about the little girl and/or dog in the Coppertone suntan lotion ad?
Perhaps the Sierra Club should rescind its endorsement
I am surprised that everyone else in the primary has not asked them to rescind their endorsement -- which was made before the debate started last night.
Same as they tried to get the Teamsters to do.
Say what you want about Cal, but he obviously continues to connect with these important advocacy groups. Much the same way he is doing to the voting public at large, especially with his healthy television buy that started this past week.
As long as he keeps focusing on the issues and not playing in side games, I expect it to be a robust couple of weeks for Cunningham and his supporters at the ballot box.

Correction: KS connects with wannabe lobbyists
Cal connects with big advocacy groups like Kilpatrick Stockton's Govt Affairs dept connects with the Obama White House --- to screw progressives.
