Hillary Gaining Ground in Southeastern NC, StarNews- Wilmington NC

Via- the StarNews Wilmington NC http://www.starnewsonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2008805040301&source=email

The deep pockets of the junior senator from Illinois have financed a flood of ads in the state's newspapers and on airwaves and even popular Web sites leading up to North Carolina's Tuesday primary.

But Southeastern North Carolina has bucked the national and statewide trend.

While donors in the Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte, Asheville, Greensboro and Winston-Salem areas all gave more money to Obama, the Wilmington area was the only metropolitan region in the state whose residents gave significantly more money to Clinton.

March, the last month for which fund-raising disclosure reports are available, was particularly lucrative for Clinton in the Port City. The New York senator received nearly $47,000 in donations, more than half of what she's raised in Southeastern North Carolina since her campaign began.

Cuz it's all about the benjamins, bay-bee.

Look, I know fund-raising is one key issue that can be used to measure how effective a campaign is doing. And money, unfortunately, fuels what should be essentially a public discourse, and not an advertising spree.

But in the end, my $50 contribution and your (generic) $4300 contribution still only comes from one person - and we each can only vote once.

Um, yeah, but

the first paragraph of that article goes like this,

Reflecting his huge cash advantage nationally, U.S. Sen. Barack Obama out-raised U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton by nearly 3-to-1 in North Carolina in March.

Convince me of why I should think that Clinton raising decent money in ONLY one of seven big cities and losing the money game by 3:1 in NC equals her "gaining ground."

"It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit." - Harry Truman

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

I have no idea of the timing of this report

but Mayor Saffo held a fund raiser at his home last week...starring Billary....at $1000 a pop if you wanted to schmooze with the political establishment and Bill. They were shooting for 100 people.

Wilmington is, on balance, a stronghold for DINO's. It's hard to tell the difference between elected Republicans and Dems unless the Dem is clearly a progressive...and then either they don't seem to last long in office or they go to the dark side.

The Real Estate folks and developers have a financial stranglehold on politics in this community. By the time they're through, public access to the beach will be gone, our creeks and marshes will all be dead from silt and uncontained runoff/pollution, and it won't matter that public boat ramps are crowded and poorly maintained. New Hanover County floated a bond issue with the public saying they wanted to purchase open spaces and preserve our quality of life. Voters approved it and, for example, a 40 acre wooded parcel near Monkey Junction was purchased for about half a $mil. Some strip mall developer recently offered the county big bucks and if it hadn't been for the public outcry of deceit and stupidity, they would have sold the land and put the money in the general fund. They still may.

They need the money. The County Manager screwed up the property assessments and the City and County have a multi-Million shortfall. They gave the county manager a raise...and are talking about raising property taxes to cover their miscalculations.

MORONS!!!

have posted

responses twice tonight- neither worked.

so - now I am just testing....

I will Try to respond to all three comments-

1- I assume you mean 4600.00. The maximum amount allowed in the primary in general combined. I did not contribute that amount. Or anywhere near that amount. I have contributed less than 200.00 but I have made up the difference in phone banking and emailing, as well as fundraising from friends- in $5.00-$100.00

2. Gaining Ground. Hillary is gaining ground in a Bellweather county. New Hanover as you know can swing Dem or Repub- currently we have a Dem in the Senate District- which was held by a Repub for years.

3. DINO- Democrat in name only. YIKES, that is not very nice. As for the fundraiser- it followed a seven town barnstorming tour of small towns across NC. I was in the room- I did not contribute 1000.00, my friend was in the room, she DID not contribute 1000.00- but rest assured, if we could- we would. Mayor Saffo did not host the fundraiser- Nick Saffo did. There were Repubs, Dems and Un's in the room. President Clinton reminded everyone in the room that the current adminstration had been very kind to him and his tax bracket- but had left out millions of americans. Our former POTUS did not speak a foul word about Hillary's opponent- as a matter of fact he complimented him.

My point with the comment about contributions.

Was that the amount of the contribution from each individual at this point doesn't matter. What matters is how many people vote for the candidate. :) So whether you give $4600, (thanks for the correction) or $46, you can still only vote once. Does that make sense?

I know you are a Clinton supporter, and you're very proud of her and Senator Boseman. You've made some terrific posts, so I hope you didn't interpret my post as hostile. It wasn't meant to be. I hope you keep posting here, no matter what happens on Tuesday.

Makes sense-

I am excited about continuing to post here- after Tuesday. This is a wonderful space. I appreciate the conversations that take place between thoughtful folks- who right now may be on different teams- I like the level of respect given to all. Much different than what is taking place elsewhere on the web.

Contributions to date in SE NC

436 records $68,481 Obama
209 records $86,625 Clinton

If someone is maxed out at $4,600 they can't contribute any more for the General. Counting it is counting money that can't be spent in the primary. Obama can go back to the well. We can talk numbers till the cows come home but it's just gamesmanship. Making a fuss about an $18K spread a day before the primary suggests that there is little of substance to support the candidate.

Considering Hillary has been outspent

In the past - by as much as 4-1. Acknowledging an '18k spread' is important- in my opinion. I know that the money we raised at our little event on Sunday, will provide Hillary with an opportunity to go back to well. That was our goal- to activate a pocket of folks who had never contributed to a political campaign- we only raised $1100.00- but we did it with donations as small as $5.00 and as much as $100.00.

That's the kind of fundraising I do.

Small donor fundraising is the way to go for Democratic candidates, in my opinion. It's also the only way I can do it, since I don't know the deep pockets! :)

$1100 is an impressive total, btw. I voted for the other candidate, but I respect anyone with the commitment to work for their candidate and fund raise. Good on ya!
