How Republicans Lie

Prior to Less Merit becoming the State Auditor, the office was held in high-esteem by partisans on both side of the aisle. But like most modern-day Republicans, Merritt couldn't be satisfied with simply doing his job. Not only did he engage in illegal moonlighting and shady partisan politics, he is also using the privileges of his office to further his own personal ambitions.

As expected, the Republicans in North Carolina have come swooping in to rescue the feckless Auditor, proclaiming on the party website that criticism of Leslie has somehow "backfired." God help us, these people are without shame.

RALEIGH—North Carolina Democrat Party Chairman Jerry Meek continued his partisan political attacks against State Auditor Les Merritt today. This time, Meek’s target was the State Auditor’s office’s new public service announcement alerting the public to a hotline the public can call to report fraud, abuse, or waste. The new ad does not contain the likeness, voice, or name of Les Merritt. In 2006, the state legislature banned the use of state money to pay for public service announcements that featured the likeness, voice or name of high-ranking state officials. The impetus for the law was previous abuse by Democrat state officials including Mike Easley, Richard Moore, and Roy Cooper. Easley was sued in 2001 for his use of public money on ads featuring him while serving as Attorney General and running for Governor in 2000.

The last time such ads were run by the State Auditor’s office was under the administration of Merritt’s predecessor, Democrat Ralph Campbell, Jr. in 2001. Jerry Meek objects to the use of the term “taxpayer’s watchdog” in the ads to describe the State Auditor. However, after Campbell’s defeat in his bid for re-election to the State Auditor’s office, Jerry Meek appointed Campbell as the Treasurer of the North Carolina Democrat Party. At the time, the NC Democrat Party sent out a press release with the following statement from Chairman Meek, “As State Auditor, Ralph Campbell served as the taxpayers' watchdog. . .” (NCDP Press Release: Ralph Campbell Appointed Treasurer of the N.C. Democratic Party http://www.ncdp.org/node/211)

Chris McClure, Chief of Staff of the North Carolina Republican Party, made the following statement:

“To call Jerry Meek’s attacks on Les Merritt duplicitous would be too kind. Meek is still chewing sour grapes because Les Merritt won election to the State Auditor’s office three years ago. The truth is that any State Auditor should be known as ‘the taxpayer’s watchdog’ and Les Merritt has earned that title through his diligent work to ensure that North Carolina government is run fairly and efficiently. Les Merritt has not used his position for partisan gain, but unfortunately, that has not insulated him from continued political attacks from Jerry Meek. We should dismiss this latest assault for what it is: rank hypocrisy.”

I posted the whole press release so you can get a full-frontal view of Republican liars in action. Caught with the Auditor's virtual pants down, the Republican Party in North Carolina simply tries to change the subject. Instead of taking the Auditor to task for having his freakin' personal biography on a consumer-focused website, the NCGOP is trying to shift the essence of the complaint to focus only on the advertisements themselves.

This is a lie: Les Merritt has not used his position for partisan gain. The simple fact that Merritt includes a description of his family and his volunteer work as a major element of a website about fraud and abuse is all the evidence you need.

PS In comments at NC Policy Watch, Pope Puppet Dallas Woodhouse accidentally breaks ranks with his lying colleagues.

I have never heard you say a word about Easley, Cooper, Richard Moore, E. Marshall and others who have used taxpayer money to run ads.

The fact is, plenty of us have been complaining about the practice for years. But for the North Carolina Party of Greed, IOKIYAR.

Mr. Merritt

could resolve this issues in five minutes by simply taking down his personal biography from the website.

Will he do that? Of course not. That would be the same as saying he made a mistake. And of course, the Auditor is infallible. That's why the Office of the State Auditor is NOT listed as a place about which citizens can complain:

NOTE: At 7:16 pm, there is exactly ONE PAGE on the Watchdog's site that is operating properly. Guess which one?

Les is the Michael Vick of politics in North Carolina

The truth is that any State Auditor should be known as ‘the taxpayer’s watchdog’ * Puppy Chris

You got that right! Les is the Michael Vick of politics in North Carolina with that silly watchdog image.

Who was the republican idiot that dream that up?

Flame away

I know this will not be popular but, I think it is appropriate for the Auditor and other state officials to let North Carolinians know about their rights, how to protect themselves, how to report fraud, etc. I may think the Auditor's ads are a little too slick, but not everyone in North Carolina is as sophisticated or educated as the people who populate sites like this believe themselves to be. The Legislature expects certain state officials to educate North Carolinians about certain things, whether it is the taxpayer's hotline or the escheats fund (Taxpayer's Watchdog campaign vs NC Cash campaign - - both clever, remember the guy with the "treasure hunter" on the beach, both have the elected officials on their site).

Sometimes courts order that money be spent educating the public as well. Our government officials do a lot of good for North Carolinians, and have lots of information for North Carolinians to help themselves. While it is easy to be cynics, I personally believe state officials should get the message out and they can't rely on the MSM to do that for them.

I also don't have a big concern about a bio on the website. It takes two clicks from NCCash.com to get to the Treasurer's bio, and it is nice to know something about the official who is sponsoring the message. The more information people have the better.

Quite frankly, I hope the Auditor keeps his bio on that website with that picture, it is kind of goofy, wait, maybe he is a philatelist.

You have a point but...

The "Watchdog" ad uses the same dog image (slightly altered but very recognizable) that Merritt's campaign site has been using for 4 years. In addition Merritt controls the following domains that are mirrors of his campaign site. He is deliberately giving his campaign the "Watchdog" brand which he is using tax dollars to advertise.

nctaxwatchdog.net
nctaxwatchdog.com
nctaxwatchdog.org
taxpayerswatchdog.net
taxwatchdog.net
thetaxpayerswatchdog.net
thetaxpayerswatchdog.org

No flames

Just firm disagreement.

I have zero problems with the ads. I think they are a good idea. The biography, however, is wrong and misguided. It wouldn't bother me if it were two clicks away on another site, but to have it as part of the top-level navigation is completely out of line.

And the fact that the Treasurer does something similar

doesn't make it right. I complained about that last year - and now that you've reminded me about it, I will again.

Fair Enough

Bio on top level is a bit much.

How Republicans lie is observable. Why they lie is ominous .....

From my view, they really do believe that "the end justifies the means".

To that mindset group the "public" (the people) really do not know what is good for them and what will serve society to the greatest good. Lying to the people is actually for their own good and in the end the people, beneft and ultimately are grateful for the leadership having deceived them to what ever degree it took to achieve an end.

America's codifying of "torture" is a good example. The Republicans say "We do not torture" and then they prove the argument by defining torture in a way which validates the statement.

I say the "Republicans" because the head of that Party is the President who has indeed validated the legitimacy of torture to the world.

The republican Party has, almost to the person, supported his view and have defended it to the American people using the argument that the "Terrorist are committed to killing every single man, woman and child in America"; Therefore , to preserve liberty, we must restrict liberty and to preserve freedom, we must restrict freedom and, in order to fight terrorist, we must become like them, that we might defeat them.

How Republicans lie, James, is so very apparent, as in the Less Merit case you cite herein.

WHY they lie....is down right scary. There is NO moral i imperative.

Marshall Adame

Well said, Marshall

The allure of power seems to overwhelm them. Which is all the more remarkable since they hate everything about government. I can't get my head around why they want to be part of something they hate so much.

Why they want to be in government

I think, is so they can control government on three broad levels:

Financially motivated (rich & corporate) Republicans don't want to be a part of government. They want to control government so they can make it stop making them pay taxes.

Socially motivated (bigoted) Republicans don't want to be a part of government. They want to control government so they stop it from stopping discrimination against people their mommies and daddies taught them not to hang out with.

Religiously motivated (sheeple) Republicans don't want to be a part of government. They want to control government so they can use it to make everybody afraid to say out loud that they don't actually totally believe every single stitch of science, philosophy and teaching in a 1500-3000 year old book.

My humble opinion, anyway.

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

Excellent analysis

BUT! ... the really scary ones are the

bigotted religious rich folks ...

Take my NC Senator -- the fabulously wealthy, covertly bigotted, verbally religious Fredly ...

... please?

More Republican lying

This time from Huckabee, with a stupid lie that is hilarious for how idiotic it is. He's just like the Puppets here in North Carolina - making shit up to suit whatever delusions he happens to be having at the moment.
