Huh?? Surrealism from the Dome

Laura Leslie's blog Isaac Hunter's Tavern talks about the hate-crimes in schools bill. I can't find a transcript of the blurb I heard on the radio this morning, but I remember thinking "Huh? What??" when I heard it.

The basic argument goes like this: Sexual orientation shouldn't be included in the hate-crimes bill because it's a lifestyle choice. Huh? So, that means that if a kid is beat up because he's perceived as being gay, it's not a hate-crime because he chose to be perceived as gay? How's that again? Whether he is or isn't gay is entirely beside the point - he still got beaten up because of how he's seen, and THAT's what is being legislated.

I'm not sure how that computes, because I'm quite certain that religion isn't genetic (well, unless you look at things like Tay-Sachs disease), and the GOP isn't arguing that religion should be struck from the bill. It is most definitely a 'lifestyle choice'.

Otherwise - I'm sending my kid back to school with this instruction -

Ask them this: 'Are your parents Republicans?'

'They are?'

KERPOW - right in the kisser. 'That's what you get for being born into a family of civil rights abusers.'

Is there any difference? I don't think so. Getting beaten up is getting beaten up; the reasons might be different but the results are the same.
