It's not my fault

You have to hand it to the Party of Greed, they're still operating as though nothing is ever anyone's fault. Like feckless fools, they stand by and watch their Republican colleagues systematically destroy America's reputation in the world, all the while claiming, "it's not my fault." Things just "happen" to them, they are not responsible for anything.

And if you don't believe me, just ask Liddy Dole. She's quoted extensively in Barbara Barrett's interview in O-No! today.

Now, after two years in the Senate's GOP leadership, Dole tumbles into the minority -- back to her status as freshman senator from North Carolina and, perhaps, out of favor among Republican activists frustrated at election results. Dole is satisfied with her performance.

"I can sleep well at night knowing we did everything possible to hold the Senate," Dole said in a telephone interview Thursday. "All I know is I worked my head off, and that's all you can do."

Satisfied with her performance? God help us.

Maybe she did work her head off, but that is by no means "all you can do." Because working body parts off is not the most important measure of anything. It's what you're working on that matters most, and Liddy Dole has been working on the wrong things. She's been working to rubber-stamp a criminal administration. She's been working to prop up an emerging dictator, while ceding the power of the Senate to the president at every turn.

The reasons for the GOP losses are varied: not enough money, not enough time, not enough political magic to counter the curse of voter dissatisfaction with Iraq, President Bush and congressional corruption. "It was just too massive to overcome it," Dole said.

This is where I go livid. Senator Dole, with her head Botoxed into oblivion, appears to have no understanding that the reason things were "just too massive to overcome" was exactly her responsibility. She, along with all the other Senators in the Party of Greed, had countless opportunities to direct US foreign policy down a saner, more ethical road, and they failed to do so again and again and again.

Charlie Cook, publisher of the Cook Political Report in Washington, said Bush should shoulder most of the blame. "Is there going to be criticism of Senator Dole? Yes," Cook said. "Is it justified? Well, look: Is she the greatest fund-raiser the Republicans and the NRSC have ever had? No." But, Cook said, blaming the losses on Dole "is just crazy."

Anyone with her eyes open can see that there's more than enough blame to go around. What's missing, however, is anyone willing to say "I am accountable." The Party of Greed is bereft of individuals willing to take responsiblity for anything. These free-market fundamentalists just love to tout their ownerhship society, but when it comes to owning the problems they've created, they're more like cockroaches, scurrying into dark corners when the bright light of accountability shines in their direction.

As far as politics goes, Dole now turns to another important race: her own re-election in 2008. She already has begun raising money.

For the record, I've changed my mind about whether Dole should run again. I definitely want to see her as the Republican candidate for Senate in North Carolina in 2008. She'll have to defend an indefensible record - and if the 2006 elections showed anything, they showed that's next to impossible.

Boom. Boom. Boom.

On responsibility

I view responsibility this way: We are each 100% responsible for everything.

For example, anything that happens here at BlueNC is totally my responsibility. That's pretty easy to get, right?

But it's also your responsibility, too. If you don't like how a discussion is going and you decline to participate or raise your concerns, you are 100% responsible for whatever unfolds. Every comment or entry you make could be the one that changes the world.

Whether we choose to accept this kind of responsibility is a different question. Some may say "no thanks, that's too much burden." The way I see it, there's no burden at all. Taking 100% responsibility is an opportunity to recognize and embrace your personal power and potential to impact everything that happens.

Sometimes this view of responsibility can be sobering. For example, I say that each of us is responsible for what happens in NC-8. I obviously didn't do enough to help push Larry into a wide margin of victory. I accept that responsiblity and I have already learned from it. I will do better next time. You can count on that.

Excellent post, A

Cook is wrong, though. She does share in the blame for many of the losses and it's exactly for the reason you've mentioned. She has been a major part of the problem. The piss poor fundraising was only a small part of her contribution to the losses.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

Vote Democratic, the ass you save may be your own.

Liddy deserves credit

for doing a horrid job at the NRSC and helping hand the Senate to the Democrats. And for that, I can honestly say something I have not said in 4 years:

Thanks, Liddy!

Did anyone catch this quote from the Hood

in Ashville's Citizen-Times?

John Hood, president of the Locke Foundation, a conservative think tank in Raleigh, attributed the Democratic gains to success in recruiting candidates who are articulate, have a strong presence in the community and are able to energize voters.

“I call it the ‘Heath Bar’ explanation,” Hood said. “A Heath bar is a thin, chocolate-covered slab. It’s not nutritious and it’s pretty thin, but it still tastes good. A lot of Democrats ran Heath bar candidates in various places.”

What a putz!

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

Putz is too kind.

He's an idealogue whose spotlight is fading fast. The Puppetmaster has spend a fortune building up his house of cards over two decades. Before this decade is out, it will be a completely irrelevant sideshow, discredited for intellectual dishonesty and extremism.

What's most amusing about this is the A C-T's penchant for finding right wing apologists with no direct experience in electoral politics to comment on things they know nothing about.

Time for some LTE's.

A

PS Thanks for digging this up, Momo.

Come on mountain boys 'n gurgles

Send some letters.

Here are ideas:

Mr. Hood is the head of a multi-million-dollar opinion manufacturer. That alone should give you pause when you cite his foundation's ideological extremism in news stories.

More to the point, his observations about elections are patently irrelevant. He appears to have no electoral experience and his organization is prohibited by law from engaging in electoral politics.

Your other experts were more credible on some aspects of elections.

Please resist the temptation to be swayed by extremist positions funded by the big money behind the John Locke Foundation.

Good comments A, I will incorporate in

my lte.

You know it's amazing, the "liberal press", you know the ones that wouldn't give the time of day to most Dems are featuring their voices and faces 'all over this land', refreshing change imho.

PS A, how are you doing? Still in pain? Have plenty of good drugs still?

New drugs, getting better

Thanks for asking.

It's a good thing I write for a living, because my voice box is flatter'n a pancake right now.

Jesus A

I guess they were wrong this time about minor surgery, huh? Granted you didn't croak, so I guess that is what they care about. Insurance rates and all that.
