Jim Leutze-Democrat for NC Senate District 9

Dr. Jim Leutze, the former Chancellor of UNCW is running for the NC Senate District 9 Seat which encompasses New Hanover County.

Dr. Leutze has made the Economy, Education, and the Environment the cornerstones of his campaign. He served with honor in the United States Air Force rising from 2nd Lt. to the rank of Captain. He served as U.S. Senator Hubert Humphrey's Legislative Assistant from 1963-1964 and was witness to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and marched in Washington, DC. Jim taught at UNC-Chapel Hill for 19 years and was repeatedly honored for his excellence in teaching, becoming the first Dowd professor of War and Peace. He began his administrative career at Hampden-Sydney College where he served as President for 3 years before settling at home in Wilmington at UNCW. Under Jim’s leadership UNCW prospered, strengthening its undergraduate teaching and overall academic excellence to become one of the top ten public regional undergraduate universities in the South. Enrollment rose from 7,000 to nearly 11,000, freshman SATs rose from 926 to 1108, and student-athletes had the best graduation rate among Division I public universities in the state. Full-time faculty positions increased from 343 to 434. Research funds coming to the university grew from $2 million to $15.8 million. The campus itself grew to include more than 90 classroom, residential, administrative and support buildings; and in 2000, UNCW began its largest construction effort ever with three new classroom facilities and eight slated for renovation, along with a school of education classroom building, a regional resource center, a 263-student residence hall and a $27 million expansion and renovation of the University Union. Dr. Leutze fought aggressively for increased minority representation on campus doubling the number of African-American students there. His record is long, honorable, and diverse. We need leaders like Jim in the NC Senate. Please join the Jim Leutze for NC Senate fan page on facebook and help spread our netroots and grassroots efforts throughout our Democratic network.
