Jim Neal arrested at the Legislature today?

So says the Twitterverse:

zack_hawkins 3:35pm via HTC Peep RT @ConenMorgan RT @NCCapitol: Same sex marriage protestors entered house floor. 3 arrested, incl 2008 US. Senate hopeful Jim Neal. #ncga

You deserve a medal, my friend, not incarceration. Please stop by and let us know you're okay, after they let you out of the Big House. Or whatever house they use to silence dissenters.

Might be a video coming

As long as they don't bust Pam and swipe her camera, that is:

Pam_Spaulding 3:11pm via HootSuite BTW, security @ #ncga threatened to arrest me for taping @GetEQUAL /Jim Neal action. I have it on vid. @LauraLeslie

Gotta love those freak market extremists

I had no idea we were living in a right-wing police state. Small government Republicans. What a fucking joke.

The irony is lost on them

They're also very comfortable writing these demonstrations off as merely political, without troubling their little minds about the reasons behind said demonstrations.

Maybe getting arrested is the only way to accomplish anything.

Teh gayz in North Carolina

should flex their considerable wealth and financial muscle by going on strike for a week. Call in sick (and tired) and let the state founder from lack of revenue and resources.

Be sure to invite straight friends and family to join in sympathetic action. I'd take a week off from work in a heartbeat. Just name the date.

Alternatively, start a summer strike pattern called Fuck you, Fridays. If you're gay or an advocate for gay rights, simply be sick on Fridays, stay home from work, don't buy anything.

I was just following Orders Mein Fuhrer!

I had no idea we were living in a right-wing police state. Small government Republicans. What a fucking joke.* James

No doubt you are not up to speed on this new and amazing Republican Police State agenda. This little dust up was last Saturday at the Jefferson Memorial with the leader of Code Pink and Libertarian Adam being brutally assaulted by the DC Park Police for silent dancing at the Memorial...The Republican Police State with Fuhrer Pope of the North Carolina Gestapo will take no prisoners in this new age of conflict and total Orwellism

Thanks folks

for your support. Not surprised; always appreciative. Some people just get it.

Just to clarify, I was obviously distracted by the fracas while I was ushered out and arrested. Thereafter the officers from the Capitol Police who processed me and the Wake County Detention Center who booked me could absolutely not have been more professional or cordial. Within no time we were talking about the Heat or the Mavericks ?, family, mental health programs in North Carolina and some of the experiences they've had in other law enforcement jobs. I could write a screenplay about that experience.

I hope you'll take the time to read my summation of why I decided to take action. It's not just gay people- everyone's rights are under assault these days. Whether you agree or not- I can't just stand by and watch the 20th century repealed.

Best-

jim

Thank you, sir

Extraordinary threats demand extraordinary measures, Jim. The NC GOP is out of control, but most of the populace is blissfully unaware. If they don't start paying attention soon, it will be too late.

Thanks for standing up for equality

I saw that GetEqual was having an event today after the young dems event, but didn't plan to attend expecting jury duty (which didn't end up happening either which I was kind of disappointed about... although I was able to see a few old friends who flew into town for a short time). There was an arrest at the last NAACP rally at the General Assembly I attended too. Maybe they'll start to take notice if this pattern continues.

Speaking of staying engaged, there's a Democracy NC event on Sunday if anyone's interested:

Dear Voting Rights Advocates,

You are invited to an organizing & planning meeting in order to discuss the next steps in our "Respect Our Vote: Stop Photo ID" campaign here in North Carolina. Our broad-based coalition effort has effectively stopped voter photo ID legislation for months! Now, it's time for us to re-energize and re-focus for the summer ahead. In addition to voter photo ID legislation we'll also discuss a range of other voter suppression bills and proposals being discussed by our elected leaders in Raleigh. Come learn what you can do to educate others and hold our elected officials accountable.

The meeting will be held Sunday, June 5 from 2 to 4pm at the Durham Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St., 3rd Floor Conference Room. RSVP by clicking here. I hope to see you there.

Of, by, and for the People,

Adam Sotak, Organizing Director

Democracy North Carolina

If they manage to push through their efforts to cut off pre-registration for young people, cut back early voting, cut back or end same day registration, and make voting more expensive and more difficult by requiring a license or passport with a current address, and all the other restrictions they are pushing to make voting a privilege rather than a right, then the deck will be stacked against democracy and equality in North Carolina for a long time to come.
