John Locke fundraising appeal, offered without comment
Dear friend.
There are very few opportunities to make your money go twice as far. That’s why I’m delighted to remind you of our Spring Matching Gift Challenge. When you give to the John Locke Foundation, your gift can double in value and support the investigative journalism of Carolina Journal and the open-government work of JLF’s transparency program.
The John Locke Foundation has recently received challenge grants from generous foundations that believe in the free-market, limited government cause. If we can raise an additional $40,000 by the end of June, we’ll receive a dollar-for-dollar match on those contributions. That means the $40,000 will become $80,000 – and we’ll have the resources we need to maintain and expand these successful programs.
Time is limited and we hope you will help us with this special request.
We are committed to making every dollar count.
Your $50 gift becomes $100…$100 can double to $200…any amount you send will be worth twice as much. Your gift will help advance the cause of free-markets and limited government. And the need couldn’t be greater.
As the leading conservative think tank in North Carolina, we rely on the generous support of friends like you. Please give whatever you can – as soon as you can – to help us fulfill this time-limited matching gift challenge. Thank you for making your tax-deductible gift today!

But wait!
Doesn't sound like those foundations are all that generous to me. Challenge grants! The oldest scam in the development business.

Free Markets and Challenge Grants?
What the heck?
If the free marketeers can't support their free marketeering without distorting the marketplace for donations with matching challenges, then how "free market" are they really being?
And the hypocrisy swirls like so much oil in the gulf....
Even more basic...
Isn't the whole premise of "free enterprise" based on the idea that goods and services (like "journalism" practiced by the John Locke Foundation) are produced for "paying customers"? All their begging for money sounds like they can't make it without ...dare I say....charity?

it's nice to know there are still two-fers like this. Buy one idea, get one free!
