Kudos to Pricey Harrison

Two hours ago I had never heard the name Pricey Harrison. It just so happened that I emailed every sponsor and co-sponsor of HB726, a bill that would expunge the criminal records of those who committed a misdemeanor before the age of 18 and had a clean record for two years after.

My expectations were of a few form letters over the next few weeks. Instead, around midnight, I get a personal email from Ms. Harrison sent via her iPhone. And did I mention that I do not even live in her district??!

This is the kind of Representative we need in North Carolina and across the country. I ask my fellow BlueNCers to promote this diary and, if you can afford it, throw a few bucks to Ms. Harrison's campaign.

While we all bemoan the current inaction, we should also reward action.

She's one of the best

If only we had a whole legislature filled with good people like Pricey.

Pricey is Priceless

I have been invovled in Guilford County party politics since sometime in early 2005.. That is when I first met Pricey. She always accessible, and has time for me even though I don't live in her disctrict. She can be seen at over 80% of our county party functions, compair that with my rep Earl Jones. I have seen him only once or twice in the same amount of time.

Praise for Pricey

Pricey responds to all, and requests updates. She is highly informed and influential, especially on environmental and energy issues.

Pricey sends out periotic emails which give timely information on legislative isssues. You can email Pricey.Harrison@ncleg.net to ask to subscribe.

Pricey was the only one who responded to my email as well.

Not even my own Representative Joe Hackney, friend and Chapel Hill Rep. Verla Insko, nor any of the many reps and sens I "know" through blogging.

None.

Actually, Ellie Kinnaird sent me some rambling non-response to a question I didn't even ask.

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

Pricey is GREAT!

She is a true champion for social justice and ALL green issues! No surprise that she responded to you!

Municipal Car Tax Bill

Not sure if I agree with her on this bill.

It will allow the City of Greensboro to add an additional $5-$16 tax on each car per year.

If it passes, I would expect to see many other cities pushing for this same type of tax.

I agree with it

mostly because the towns and cities in NC are hamstrung by the legislature micromanaging almost everything they do. When I was on the Chapel Hill town council, we had to get permission from Raleigh to go to the bathroom.

Not really, but it was close. Cities need more tools than they currently have available to manage their growth and revenues.

I agree totally, James

"Cities need more tools than they currently have available to manage their growth and revenues."

I have to say, the conservatives blow my mind on the whole government issue. The Federal government is too big, and infringes on states' rights. The State government is overbudgeted (and corrupt), trying to provide blanket services that should be handled by local city & county government. But (of course) local governments are bad, because they tax and annex to make themselves more powerful.

The bottom line is: collective governing is a bad idea, and we should allow people to rule whatever property they can take and hold. And hope we aren't cursed by witches or struck down from the Black Death...

What concerns me with this proposed additional tax

What concerns me with this proposed additonal tax is that the majority of families are having to pinch every penny at the moment.

Over the past few years, the Greensboro City Council has a poor track record of making good investments with their additional spending.

If this tax was voted on by the residents of Greensboro, I doubt more than 5% would approve.

If you notice, no other member of the NC House wanted to sign on to this legislation.

The Guilford County electorate never wants

to raise taxes in any way shape or form but they pass those bonds with wild abandon.

Progressives are the true conservatives.

that's why you don't allow the citizens to vote on taxes

The only tax citizens would ever vote for is one that somebody else pays. Witness all the trouble counties have had recently trying to get additional sales taxes (or heaven forbid) a land transfer tax passed. Politicians are elected to make these decisions, and if the people don't like them, they can vote the bums out. I don't want to live in a referendum state.
