Live Blogging the NC Senate - School Violence Prevention Act passes
Senator Rand moved to vote on the smoking ban at end of business today and Senator Berger opposed. Rand withdrew the motion. Berger said they shouldn't be in a rush. It's a popular bill and there should be further discussion and debate.
Why haven't I listened to this before? It's almost as much fun as squishing squash bugs.
[update 1]
Now, I love southern accents. I really do. Some of these men need to spit the marbles out, though. They also need to speed things along. Good Lohwood, Senator Rayand....just how many syllables are you going to give that word?
Love this 5 second voting thing.
[update 2]
Rand just removed HB88 Healthy Youth Act from today's calendar and sent it to committee on Mental Health....didn't get full name of committee.
[update 3]
It appears we're going in order and we're at SB514, so hopefully the Preventing School Violence Act is next.
[update 4]
Nope...jumped to SB567 passes on its 3rd reading and is being sent to the House. (or an amendment) I might have missed Senator Rand moving the School Violence Prevention Act off the calendar. I hope they're just saving it for last since they know it may take a little longer.
[update 5]
I'm not sure I've ever had this much fun. My daughter just informed me that my fun is about to come to an end b/c she wants her Macbook back as soon as she's finished with math.
Sigh. I'll try to get my machine to remain unfrozen so I can further enjoy listening to the NC Senate proceedings.
[update 6]
Here we go......
26 in the affirmative. YAY!!!!!!!!!! We did it! Senate Bill 526, the School Violence Prevention Act has passed! It's going to the House.

Good Lohwood!
Very funny.
Do good. Be nice. Have fun.
I love southern accents!
Some words defy phonemic spellin's.
Sadly, I'm not up to speed since this is my first day listening in. It makes it hard to speak intelligently on anything. Of course, that won't stop me.

Apparently they are moving too fast
they are taking a break to get the "machine" up. Moving too fast? :D
I'm sure that's rare in the Senate.

Thanks for covering
We are so excited to see this bill move forward after three years of work. Now to get the House on board again!
You actually picked a dull day to listen. Couldn't believe there was no debate on the School Violence Prevention Act, just the vote, especially after suffering through all those technical bills on hunting, etc.
Seriously, some days the floor debates are absolutely hilarious and/or outrageous. Try tuning in for the corporal punishment debate sometime, for example.
Another tip: download the day's calendar from www.ncleg.net to see the order of bills. They usually follow it more or less.
Thanks for the advice
I will do that. (download the calendar) As southern as my ears are, I was still having a hard time understanding a little of what was said.
Thank you so much for all your hard work. I'm sorry I simply copied your emails a couple of times, but sometimes when it is urgent that we take action that's the fastest way to get things posted.
I am very excited that the bill passed the Senate b/c I believe they have the votes in the house. When the NC Family Policy Council succeeded in their efforts last cycle I was so angry I made a statement that wasn't supported by fact, but that I believe to my core to be true. I wound up retracting and apologizing. I simply can't imagine an individual or group that would vote against a bill that is intended to protect children.
